THE POSITION
Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking a Forestry Inventory Assistant (Limited/*On Call) with our Office of the City Forester.
Denver's Office of the City Forester is housed within the Park and Recreation's Natural Resources Division and is internationally renowned for its innovative management of Denver's community forest. Denver's trees provide citizens with the feel of a city within a park providing character to neighborhoods and highly valued shade to structures, public spaces and grey infrastructure. The Office is responsible for the oversight of 2.2 million trees within the City and County of Denver with an asset value of $2.9 billion that provide $122 million in annual environmental services.
Denver has over 4,000 acres of traditional parks and parkways which include 2,500 urban natural acres, over 300 acres of parks designated Rivers & Trails and an additional 14,000 acres of spectacular mountain parks.
ABOUT OUR JOB
THIS IS A *ON-CALL LIMITED POSITION WITH AN ESTIMATED END DATE OF 12/31/17, WITH A POSSIBLE EXTENSION BASED ON NEED AND BUDGETING.
* On-Call status = A position in which the incumbent works as needed. On-call positions may have routine or variable work patterns and are generally filled to accommodate seasonal or short term activities in various city agencies.
This position will divide their time between working at the Forestry office in the Webb Building (201 W Colfax Ave, Denver, 80202) and working in the field, which requires walking and working in inclement weather conditions.
- Researches and analyzes a variety of operational issues, collects data from various sources, evaluates data, and prepares reports and presents preliminary recommendations to supervisor or manager.
- Evaluates and monitors new or existing procedures for effectiveness, outlines needed changes for improvements, and assists in the implementation of new and revised methods, procedures, or systems.
- Acts as a liaison by providing technical support and customer service to staff members, other city department/agencies, and the public while maintaining a working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to the operational area.
- Maintains the official records retention schedule to facilitate records storage and retrieval and provides training to staff members in order to ensure compliance with records retention policies and procedures and to explain newly developed or revised records management procedures.
- Assists in determining if new equipment is needed, purchases equipment and operating supplies, contacts vendors to resolve discrepancies, and monitors expenditures.
- Participates in developing, revising, and updating instructional materials, manuals, and websites.
- Trains employees on new procedures and other areas that are specific to the work area.
- Travels and works locally out in the field up to 75% of the time, which includes working, walking and/or driving in inclement weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold, etc.).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education Requirement:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.
- Three (3) years of professional experience in data collection and entry AND interpreting/applying/explaining regulations, policies, standards and procedures to internal/external customers.
- Candidate must be willing to travel locally and work in the field up to 75% of the time, which includes walking, working and driving in inclement weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold, etc.).
- An Associate's degree or higher in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Natural Resources or directly related field.
- Strong knowledge of urban tree identification in the Front Range area.
- Knowledge of tree pests and diseases in the Front Range area.
- Fluency with mobile data collection devices, Microsoft Office suite, and internet navigation.
- Professional experience interacting with the public to explain and interpret regulations/standards/laws/policies.
- Additional appropriate education may be substituted for two years of the minimum experience requirement.
- Possession of a valid driver's license. Must obtain Colorado Class "R" driver's license within 60 days of hire.
- License must be kept current as a condition of employment.
