engraved D rings

My boss received 2 new Buckingham saddled (Glide lite). Before he issued them he engraved the Co. initials and the gut that was getting it on the hip D rings. Does that sound like a safe thing to do?

There are engravers that are better than others. Jackhammer style is NOT good of course.

If I remember correctly from a past discussion using an electronic etcher is better than an engraver. The one that I have is like a soldering iron. It makes a little spark when I etch. In the UK they have to mark all gear. They're pretty up on approved marking systems.

Unless the engraving takes huge divits out of the material I wouldn't be too suspect. Take a look at the hard use that big wall climbers put their biners through. The aluminum in biners and hard gear is darn tough and maleable.

Why not use a marking pen and write on the fabric?

The boss thinks thinks we do. The guys sighed for the gear and if they part ways the Co. knows they were issued the gear.

I spray paint all of my hard gear pink to ID it. some people have gotten 'caught' with pink gear and had some 'splainin' to do! Our family watches out for each other!

No I don't but we're talking principle. Maybe the boss would be open to letting someone purchase issued gear when they part ways but I don't feel it's appropriate for someone to just claim ANY gear when leaving. When someone shows up for their first day and their gear is marked in pink nail polish or Asplundh, or Wright...I'm red flaggin' 'em. Sorry Scott I know that wasn't your question. Most of my gear is marked -your climbing sucks- in majic marker somewhere where it won't wear off. I haven't had anything stolen in forever. If someone leaves I usually send them with gifts, gear and lots of laughs.
