I know many of us have had very limited exposure to the hard sciences. The link included in this post probably shows why. The late Dr. Peter Donzelli adapted material like that of the statics section to tree climbing in articles he wrote for Arborist News. Also, some of the material in the link can be applied to material written by Claus Mattheck.
