End-for-end splice for pinto rig prusik

I'm trying to make a DIY PulleySaver with some Arbormaster and trying to get the prusik for the pinto sorted. I have got some 3/8 UltraTech lying around that I was thinking of using, and I'd really like to have the prusik being a loop through the pulley (like on the actual PulleySaver) rather than two eyes spliced on the pulley. Does anyone know of a suitable type of cordage that you can do an end-for-end splice into a loop short enough for this application?

The Samson splicing instructions for UltraTech (DB class 2)call for 5 fid lenghths of addidional rope (38 & 3/4" for 3/8 cord)... or is that for each end, meaning twice that?

Also, would such a splice be a bad idea anyway because during use the parts of the splice would be all contorted in the prusik?

Is the only realistic way to use such a loop as a prusik to have it stitched instead of spliced?

At the moment I've just got the UltraTech looped with double fishermans which is obviously not ideal for retrieval through the canopy.

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any advice...

Thanks,

Jason

Samson Icetail can be used. Do a total bury through both ends and stitch in place. When the prussic is tied, have the bury sat on the top of the prussic..
-ive never tested this but would be happy climbing on it everyday.

Use a hollow braid and enjoy! I used all gear tech cord with a full bury and crossover. I saw at least 3 others with the same setup at the new england chapter tcc.

How long is the piece of cord before you start for one of these setups with 8mm cordage? Also, the full bury - can you explain a little more, is it that one leg is buried half way around the loop and the other is also half way, meeting on the opposite side of the crossover? Hope that makes sense??

Thanks guys. I've got a bunch of Tenex I had thought of using, but was worried about the strands picking against rough bark etc. Maybe that's not such a big issue in this application.

JeffL, the AllGear Tech Cord looks interesting. I see that it is 16 strand hollow braid. Is it pretty similar to 12 strand like Tenex or Yalex? Maybe with the denser strand count it would be less likely to pick?

Cheers,

Jason

I like the smaller diameter after burying the tails back in itself. Not a single pick in the cord, its fairly taught being wound in a prussik anyways. It starts out flat, but ends up nice and round after splicing and with use. Some will say its a self abrasive fiber, but its fairly cheap and super easy to splice, so no issue making another. If you've already got the tenex, why not use that? Its the eye of the host rope that's going to be dragged through crotches anyways, not the pulley and prussik.

Jeff be careful with that tech cord. Make sure you inspect it regularly where it rides on the pulley. Unless things changed and the fibers have changed it can become self abrasive.

If I wanted to put a DMM thimble on the 8mm tech cord - for my lanyard to wrap on a branch - how small can I make the loop? If I were to make it small enough, I would end up with 2 fid lengths on each leg until they meet at the bottom of the loop. My question is if it would be safe? It would be wrapped in a 6 coil prussic and stiched.

Thanks in advance and sorry if it's a newbie question - I just cant seem to find any detailed info for for splicing a loop other than the basic end for end splice with 2 ropes.

Here's a photo of an 8mm ocean poly loop I made for my pulleysaver. 5 wraps keeps the pulley super close to the knot, just the way I like it.

Will, did you use standard class 1 double braid end-for-end splicing instructions for you OP loop?
I was thinking of ordering a bunch of 8mm OP but haven't done that type of splice before. Is it relatively straight forward?
Your loop looks about 18" long, is that as short as you can get with this splice?

Here's my contraption so far.

yup, just the regular class 1 double braid end for end. the only tricky part is that it's a bit difficult to have enough cover slack if you make the loop too small. Honestly I don't remember how much cordage I started with, but I think anything shorter than that would not work.
