as much as I'm happy i didn't spend much time working off a blades hitch, i do think that anyone who did always looks like they can tear it up on spikes

I'm digging on that Blakes hitch for sure. I've never used it but I like how simple it is. He's got his coil of rope there and he's all set!

I still use the Blake's hitch on the tail end of my line, if I feel the need for an extra TIP longer than my lanyard. Blake's is definitely worth knowing in a pinch.

I do know it and use it occasionally as you described. It's gotten me out of a few pinches for sure, mostly back in dark ages of doubled rope climbing.
