Elm removal at mini golf coarse

Here are sum pics of an elm we took down this week. Okietreedude came up from oklahoma w/ my new grcs and helped out w/ the removal. Also received some help from Brian T. from kc.

What a long day it was. Everything but the last bit of stick had to be roped down. Tons of obstacles. All went well though.

Don't get me wong.......not judging.........how did you determine that was safe enough to climb? Looks a little dead to me. I wouldn't have touched it without a bucket or unless I could drop the main ledars.

I usually write those off. Suppose i'm just scared! Haven't worked enough with dead trees to know. If I see the bark falling off the trunk i'm done. Your pics were great and thanks for sharing the insight. Nice rigging!

I can smell the dead elm right now. It smells like money :)

After seeing many elms die and decline from DED I have a pretty good feeling for how sturdy they are. I'm sure that Brandon has the same feelings for the trees in his area. If the smaller twigs are still hanging on the tree should be climbable. When the dead ends get to be about two inch diameter is the time to stay out of the tree no matter what. By then, the decay has generally gotten to the trunk and made it soft. These are rough guess-timates based on my experiences in Minneapolis.

Thump testing and pulling are good indicators too.
