Doesn\'t Make Sense? Enviro friendly Lamps?

How can they call Compact Flourescent Lamps Enviro Friendly?

gottta a box of lamps. the warning Hg LAMPS CONTAIN MERCURY. Manage in accordance with disposal laws.

If one breaks in the nursery you are to remove the child immediately, go back open windows, close the door, turn off A/c heating etc and ventilate for 15 minutes any clothing is to be disposed as if toxic waste.

Be careful these things are sold as green but they are really toxic mercury and please dispose of properly.

Yep. I did a dump thing a long time ago with a CFL. I put 2 CFL's in a 3 setting lamp. So, we were in the living room and we heard a loud hiss from the lamp, saw a white cloud, and then the odor came. It was the worst smell ever. Eventhough it was winter, I opened up the windows, turned on fans, etc...

It was my fault for putting them into a lamp like that.

So, yeah. It was toxic to our environment indeed.

I wished LED's were more cost effective. They are the way to go.

Until there is a 'cradle to grave' environmental rating system there is no way to filter through marketing BS.

The nuclear power industry is good at saying how 'clean' their power is. Until all of the nasty pollution involved in making steam power is considered they can still blather on. When the pollution from mining and concentrating the uranium all the way to dealing iwth the nuke wastes are considered then we might have a better understanding of 'green' energy.

This is the crux of the issue. With our resource usage and the way we live these days, someone is making something dirty, either before, during or after we use - lest say consume something. Riding around in an electric car is just so much holier-than-thou greenshit.

And the heat from incandescent lights is not a waste in northern climates for 8 months of the year anyway. It simply helps supply some part of home heating necessity.

What I think is needed is a a closed system where companies are financially responsible for their products from cradle to grave. As it stands now, companies operate with blinders on. Not too worried about what is going on outside of the use of their products.
