allmark and Tom;

I don't understand allmarks objection.

I think Tom means something like the attachment, but with an open Spelter socket attached directly to the cable and a closed Spelter socket for the climbing line.

Again, I don't know if these are smooth enough for a climbing line. Looking at the chart in Tom's attachment they definitely have a big radius.

I thought he was talking more along the lines of something that would be fiked to the line similar to a gibbs on a rope. I misunderstood his set up.

On a crane with a wire rope I still use Norms set up with a shackel. The only drawback I find is it will tilt the hook away from you when weighted sometimes.

When Marks article was first shown here on the board I realized I had everything to set it up and did so the following day.I had a short flat strap FC that I bought from Kuemmerlings and used it.I picked up a new roll of wire for wiring the shackle closed and haven't made much of a dent in yet.I also tossed in a roll of electrical tape and wrap the webbing with the tape so it doesn't somehow flop out of the shackle during picks.The short webbing alows me to stay in reach of the hook when setting chokers.After the piece has been lowered and I'm setting another choker I clip a carabiner through the rings and place my line through the biner to descend to my next cutting point(unless theres a sutable natural crotch available).I have been pleased with how the set-up works.I like the way the short webbibg works with the 110 lb McKissick ball on my rig.

Like Norm, I've never heard of a crane line losing a ball either

I have once. Ask Riggs.

That would be scary!

Man. A couple of months ago my crane operator was in a crappy location. He was looking into the sun and his depth perception was thrown off. While he was bringing the ball back to me (I was tied into the tree) he got the ball hung up on some small branches. I was going to signal to him "Boom up and cable up" when all the sudden the braches gave way. I had a 150lb ball swinging at me. It was only 6' away from me but it had plenty of enertia to hit me and knock me off my balance. I was not happy about that one.

But, I have to take some of the blame. I should have seen that comming and told him to boom up and cable up before he got to those branches.

I've heard of one incident where a tree pick was spinning. The piece spun pretty fast for so long that the winch cable broke & dropped the stem & ball on the outrigger! (Bloomington IL about ten years ago. I'll probably see the guy at IAA conf. tomorrow)

Mike,

Can you find out what kind of cable was used? (Size, rotational, etc.?)

Thanks,

TMW
