Dealer Service Problems

Stihl MS 660 is back from the shop. Went in for service due to its poor operation. Simple fix it needed a new fuel line. That sure didn't solve the problem brought it back, and the dealer rebuilt the carb. Got it back again ran it very minimally as its my biggest saw used only for weekend wrecreational use. Long story short pretty sure it's blown up.

Other then ranting I write this seeking advice from the forum. Should I bring it to a different dealer to get diagnosed, or take it back to the same dealer that seems to like my "repeat buisness."

If you are talking having a dealer rebuild it...be prepared for sticker shock! You'll be around 50% of what a new saw costs...oem parts are expensive and so is hourly shop rate...hope the lower end is alright for you.. good luck.

You can check to see if the piston is scored very easily by bulking the muffler off and shine a light in as you cycle the cylinder. Very inexpensive way to determine if you should be shopping or servicing. But def find a new dealer or take a mall engine class and do it yourself!

Riviezzo makes a good point. Fuel line miss diagnose .... oh well, it probably needed one anyway. Carb too? They should eat that bill and honor you as a valued customer. Overall you have a 660. Not a homeowner throw away. Rebuild or new saw .....they should take care of your decision.

I would try to fix it yourself or sell it parts saw/part it out on eBay.

With parts and $50/hr shop rate coupled with questionable result would prevent me paying the dealer to attempt a repair.

Other option is to find a saw builder/modifier and have them port the new top end/reassemble. Aside from parts, prob would not cost more than a usual port job, which would be less than a dealer repair bill.

Not sure what your situation is but may be worth offering to pay an employee their normal hourly rate to fix it...

Saws back they owned the repair shiny new top end at no cost to me. The Tech said he pressure tested the the crank case no leaks and he wasnt certain why the the top end failed. He showed me the old piston and pointed out that it was scorned on both the intake and exhaust side. Which he said was abnormal. Any of you have any insight on this situation?
