davey tree approved saddles

I told you Jeff, dont go work for one of the BIG GREEN MONSTERS (Davey and Bartlett). I did the Bartlett thing for awhile and learned some really good stuff about PHC, IPM, and Safety but had no freedom to express my climbing styles and luckily I worked at a satellite office and got away with using my TM or Ergo and 7/16 climbing line and all the good stuff, but when I would go help out a main office they gave me the 3rd degree and stripped me of all my cool gear and I was climbing old school all day. Not that I cant rock a tautline or blakes but sure is hard to go back to after climbing in the 21st century.

Would love to and believe me if i even thought i could afford it i would be there! I did notice in the little bit i've climbed with it so far, the leg straps did slide around a good bit. I'll probably sew them in place. I haven't been able to use the TM for any extended period of time, so I don't know the true meaning of comfort! Good luck in Atlanta and with your company!

take the weaver cougar deluxe what a steaming pile of crap! i have spent the last three hours trying to cut weight and get the darn thing adjusted. the padding in the thing is so "cadillac" that the belt won't stay tight the padding shrinks and you have to tighten it up. the thing is so padded up that it is hot as hell even today when it's thirteen degrees outside, i can't imagine this thing in the middle of a heat wave in the summer. the bridge is to short. the leg pads: who needs that much padding as pro climber? if they do then they need to go back to cleaning out gutters and leave the climbing to the real pro's.

I just bought a cougar and i like it for most the reasons you seem to hate it. I like all the padding. I have a buckingham master deluxe. I tried a couple other saddles but they don't have enough padding in the leg straps. The cougar has the padding that i like and the adjustability that i need. I will however be customizing it slightly to put a tied bridge on. When testing bridge lengths i ended up liking the shortest one possible! I don't know how others can make it through a cabling job or even an all day removal without the padding in the cougar or the buck' deluxe saddles. But then again maybe i'm not pro and should be cleaning gutters! If i should stick to gutters you should stick to a walk behind mower considering my over padded leg straps have kicked your TM/Austria custom saddle's rear-end in both comps we competed together!

Talking to the Penn/Del champ who works for davey, i thought it was interesting what saddles they allowed and which they don't. Also what techniques they allow and don't. Glad i have a lot of freedom to choose with the company i work for! Hope it works out for you.

there is play smack talk and there is real smack talk..... you my friend just spewed real smack from your hole; thanks i needed that. now i have you to think about every time i train and you are now my sole focus and motivation for training. for instance after i read what you wrote i went and ran 1.5 miles worth of hills in the neighborhood behind my house in 19 degree weather. i love it. i truly love a good challenge. i really hope you plan on attending charlotte and can back up that smack talk with some real climbing. sincerely jeff cochran

I started working for Davey in may. At first, I was really disappointed in the selection of saddles that are approved for climbing with this company. In the end, I got a Glide II, which is pretty similar to my personal Tree Austria III. They buy it, so I can't complain too much. I think it is a little sad that they don't keep up better with the cutting edge technology that is coming out in the tree climbing world, but I guess I understand that they are a huge company, and having standardized equipment is pretty expensive. I can't wait until something like the sequoia, tree austria or tree motion end up being approved, but I won't hold my breath.

in my opinion they need a fresh opinion on which saddles to approve. seems like some desk jockey is trying out all the saddles and picking the ones he/she would like not the ones that the guys in the field would want. there is a reason that the tm is so expensive: it's called innovative design. the tm is awesome.
dan your post cracked me up.
i agree with all thats been said, but as far as testing goes they have been in every tcc for the last five? years.

Agreed 100% with you and I feel your frustrations,I work for them as well.
I felt like that when they took out our aluminum tripod orchard ladders and replaced them with the fiberglass orchard ladders

don't get me wrong; i really like where i work and my boss. it's just somethings are archaic; but they have to move slow a lot of peoples safety depend on it.

let me restate this: i like were i work and the people i work for, there are some things i disagree with but that is anywhere you work.

ha, that's just the beginning of what you will find out. There is plenty of great gear that you will find out isn't approved. So, I've been told anyway. Shoot, they just recently (last year or two?) approved lanyards that adjust with a microascender instead of a prussic wrap to adjust the length. (So I was told from an X Davey employee.)

I told you this on your facebook page.

Maybe another 15 years and the TM will be approved. By that time, it will be viewed as very old and outdated and it will then be approved.

I was given a micrograb for lanyard and I had a custom saddle made by buckingham when I worked there in the 80's.

Jeff,

I do not know you, but I can see your conundrum.

Furthermore, I rarely offer advice, since I have rarely ever taken it. However, I am three cups of coffee into my morning so I'll break with protocol.

In the words of my gran-mammy:
"Bloom where you are planted"

In one of my favorite movie quotes. The sub commander says to his first officer:
"We are here to protect democracy not practice it"

In the oh so elegant words of a former 1st Lt. platoon leader, as we were just informed of causalities and currently coming under fire:
"We suck it up. We drive on."

Compiled wisdom of near a lifetime as and/or with tree people.
"The climber makes the saddle not the other way around"

So there you have it.

Ignore it or take it as it is offered in peace.

Tony

Tony,

Every day is a vacation now! Im just glad I can have the freedom to read something on the buzz and implement it into standard practice the very same day and not have to ask permission from somebody who is still climbing on a tauntline. By the way I am a proud owner of 1/2 spider legs. Love em.

Jeff - wow - Lot's of hatin' on the cougar! I live down here in the hot south and it has been my saddle for 2 years now. I have to let it air out after the day is through and wash it 2 or 3 times during the summer with a little soap and the water hose - but it has performed flawlessly for me! I have replaced the rope bridge with my own preferred bridge. I also attach a micro pulley directly to the bridge and my carabiners attach directly to it - Minimal friction on the bridge. Yeah, those black rubber bumpers only got in the way, but take 'em off - takes about 2 seconds. Other than that - no gripes! Actually thought about buying a new one for the new year. Oh, and I haven't tried cleaning gutters in it yet, but guess i should give it a go!

Ahhhhhhh, one more thing - Jeff - you're talking about cutting weight from a 6lb saddle (at most) - what do you want it to? 3lb?! Ok instead, lose the twinkies and ho ho's for a week and i that'll take take care of that 3 lbs.

All joking aside, I know alot comes into personal preference, but if I'm 5'9" and 155lbs and can lug that "heavy" joker around for 4-6 hrs in the trees everyday (usually DdRT) then i would imagine anybody can. And I don't care what saddle you're sporting - at 95 degrees and 92% humidity, your nuggets are gonna be sweating!!! Thank goodness for UA underwear!

Hope my first 2 posts on here don't get me banned!
