Man, 65, tries to stab civic worker felling tree

KITCHENER (Feb 3, 2007)

A 65-year-old Kitchener man has been charged with attempted murder after an incident this week in which a man tried to stab a city worker who was cutting down a tree on Queen Street South, Waterloo regional police said yesterday.

The worker, a 49-year-old Strathroy man, wasn't hurt. He was protected by a calculator and digital camera in his coat pocket, Insp. Bryan Larkin said.

The incident occurred about 2 p.m. Thursday between Schneider and Homewood avenues. Trees are being removed to facilitate widening of the Queen in the area, Larkin said.

Upset that four large trees were being removed, a man came out of his home and approached one of the workers. It's alleged that he pulled out a knife and thrust it at the worker's chest, Larkin said.

Other city workers subdued the man and held him until police arrived.

Larkin said there has been an ongoing dispute between the accused and the city over the road work being done on Queen Street.

Ronald Dahms is also charged with uttering death threats and possession of a dangerous weapon.

He was slated to appear in bail court yesterday.
