Custom made mini grapplehook

made myself a custom mini three prong grapplehook, (NOT FOR LIFE SUPPORT!) for treework....to pull branches in closer, retrieve dropped gloves or handsaw, to pull the tail end of a rope in closer, to lower down to the ground to pick up the water canteen etc etc etc etc etc.

PICS LATER TONIGHT!!!!!!

basically all i did was go to Mountain Equipment COOP here in Vancouver, and buy one of these:

Black Diamond TALON hook, made of forged steel, (used for rock climbing as a "piton" or clifftop crack piece)

I then added a eyebolt (3/8" ) and put on a few nuts first for weight, then a split washer, then the Talon, then a NYlock self locking nut on the very end. Add 4 mm static cord, and PRESTO, you have a mini grapple. The hook points face towards the eye of the eyebolt. weighs less than 1/2 a LB, easy to toss , retrieve, lower and it does'nt snag or wrap around limbs . Works incredibly well ! (again, i did NOT make this for life supoort, purely as a third hand tool)

cost me a whopping $14 CDN to make.

I can see using it for switching trees without a groundie helping. You could set a throwline in an adjacent tree and then snag the throwline with the hook and then set your climbing line. Would be very useful for recreational climbing.

Thanks for the idea.

Thats a nice little hook (New Tribe) there Mr Dunlap! similar price too!

the one i made REALLY shines for removing "hangers" or widowmakers, from belocw the climber. Lower it down, snag the limb, lift it up (via a MINI prussick minding pully) and drop it down. Once i switch to load rated stainless steel eyebolt and nut, it will be grate for traverses,

Clver!

You must have a quality hardware store near you. Finding SS eye bolts is a treasure. The NT grapple is SS too. I have no clue how strong it is but if the strength follows other SS products in that diameter stock it should be plenty strong to use as a secondary point for a traverse.

Batman is right...

That is a BD talon, I doubt the hooks are big enough to be effective. One is for a "bat hook hole" 1/4", the others for small edges. Try "Fish" aid gear, they have much bigger hooks that could be modded.

that is correct! it is a BD Talon. I simply added an eyebolt, loctite, nylock nuts and there you go!. custom made for me and my needs. works gangbusters for removing hanger limbs.
