Are their any tips for when you smooth it out to get a constant diameter and no bulges. I have yet to perfect this on all my practice ropes. Any ideas would help thanks

The big thing for getting it nice and smooth is getting a nice smooth taper on the cover and the core. You can also stagger the taper and that can get you a smoother taper.

Just a matter of getting your measurements correct and cutting appropriately. On the cover taper, you've got 8 strands removed and 8 remaining, to be tapered over 6.5". So if you were to cut one strand flush off at 6.5, leave one full length, and cut the other six at just about 3/4" intervals, and do the same on the last 6.5" of the core tail, the crossover should lay pretty neatly on itself after being buried and smoothed. Make sense?

Obviously this is "by the book" as far as #'s go, I know I've heard of some people doing it differently, some only remove 7 strands to have a fatter tail, more finger trap action on the splice, or just laying out the tail, fanning the strands and cutting at an angle, etc.

Hey Ty, what do you think about staggering the taper?

cool guys thanks for the responses I have done the done both mentioned above. Can't remember which ones worked best. I guess it is just more practice.
