crane question

Well butch I don't feel its that drastic!
My point is there are people everywhere with non locking hooks making picks, even without a climber on the hook like in the system I outlined above.

No winch on a chipper is hell! Theres a local owner in our neck of the woods that says "anyone who buys a chipper without a winch is an A-hole!" I was trying to be funny, Butch. That's all not trying to relate dieing to dragging brush!! I do agree a chipper with no winch is dumb!

TMW where in Maine is this class anyway? There are no classes or courses offered around here. I would like to attend some classes that are two hours at least of me. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Somehow it loses something when you have to explain it that much.

I agree with you in not running the climbing line over the side of the ball. If the ball is 285lbs plus the wieght of the climber. How many times can a climbing line or a friction saver take a hit between the ball and a limb or the spar with over 1,000lbs psi. I am guessing on the psi but you have over 500lbs ascending and the ball and tree are round similar to a ball peen hammer so you are not really getting a square inch of contact maybe a .5 inch or less, so you could double the force not to mention the speed at which it takes a hit, if I'm two speeding the winch when contact is made you should probably throw the line away at that point. If it's a friction saver I'll give it another go. Sometime soon I will test this theory, without a climber of course. In the meantime we'll put the load where the manufacturer recomends. Any guesses on how many hits the line will take?

If the rope is being struck by the ball(i am assumeing against the tree), Where is the the climber in relation to this. I know I would not be happy getting hit against the tree.

Yes, I think I've had that happen once or twice before. My climbing line can take a bump.

A bump is much different than a hit.
