Crane job we did this past saturday.

Was that the father or son operating the crane? I have worked with the father. He is a good operator. I have a shackle set up for when I have used other cranes. Its not har to put on. Nice job.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was SR, he is usually the one running the mack. JR, has the smaller crane and is also a very good operator. I would recomend both of them.

I like the two climber method also. Not always the way to go but it certainly helps when the crane is running for days at a clip. It seemed to work well here. Always enjoy pictures.

Having 2 climbers is always nice and is sometimes more efficient in getting things done quicker when working with the crane. Its a luxury I do not often get as I do 99% of the climbing and 90% of the bucket work myself but on occaision we have another climber that comes in to lend a much appreciated hand. I am hoping to take on another full time climber this year to lighten the climbing load on me a bit but I am not holding my breath as good climbers are far and few inbetween.

As one who has been tagged by osha I must point out a small thing that will get you noticed by an osha inspector- guy running the chipper with ear phones and no hard hat is a no-no!

Looks like a tight operation.

So, why did the tree have to come down?

[/ QUOTE ]

It was consistently dropping limbs on her car and in her garden and recently lost a substantial sized leader.

Yup, you are absolutely correct. In his defense though, hard hats are mandatory on all my jobs and were worn through out this day. As you can see in the pic the log truck was full and we had to chip the last couple logs to finish up the job, he grabed a set of muffs that were near by to chip the logs. Not that OSHA would accept that as an acceptable excuse but after a long day I was not going to bust his Ba!!s over it.

I too have a mandatory hard hat rule. One guy on my site was raking up and using a leaf blower without his hemut on with led to an 8k citation. Similarly right as we were packing up basically. I now have a if you are not in the truck you have a hard had rule for every one on the job. It makes it easier to keep bystanders at a distance as well.
Don't mean to be an osha whistle blower just beware- osha spies are everywhere!

Did you try to fight it? Do you think it is too late to litigate against that?

Really?

Just for that? That isn't fair. What about the millions of landscrappers who don't use a hard hat? After all, we (arborist's) are lumped together in the Green Industry.

I always take off my helmet when everything is on the ground (during clean up). It's simply a way to vent the nogg'n and get sun on the forehead.

Now I have to rethink taking my helmet off during clean up?

that would ruin my day. A local company that I have helped out on occasion got hit for $500.00 a head X 4 = $2,000.00 by OSHA. That was about five years ago now so the fines have probably gone up since.
