Crane and chipper workshop

Thanks Jsin,

We are still getting some folks registering, including at least 5 OSHA representatives. It looks like it will be a good workshop.

I would like to continue these workshops as long as there is an interest to do so.

Thanks,

TMW

Crane and Chipper Workshop a Success!

Just a quick note to say that the workshop went well.

We had about 50 attendees, which included a few TreeBuzzers, OSHA compliance officers, (and the OSHA Area Director for Maine!) and arborist's from 5 states.

A big thank you to our sponsors, we could not have done it without them:

Safety Works!
Quality Crane Services, Inc.
Altec
Maine Arborist Association
Yale Cordage

You'll be seeing/hearing more about this later, when I have time to write the TCI Magazine article, but a good time was had by all.

We even played with our new Yale Vectrus Crane Slings! The slings are 7/8" diameter, rated and labeled (as required by ASME B30.9) with a safe, knotted working strength of 10,625 pounds! (See attached picture)

A special thanks to all of the Buzzer's who made the trek. We are already planning a non-crane, rigging workshop for the same site.

Thanks and have a great holiday weekend!

Re: Crane and Chipper Workshop a Success!

I just wanted to say thanks to Tim and everyone who put on this great workshop!

I learned so much from everyone and meeting other fellow Buzzer's was great too.

Tim not only gave a great presentation in class, but also demonstrated the techniques out in the field too.

The site was great and prefect for a future rigging demo.

I will definitely attend another class and encourage others to do so if they can.

Thanks Again Tim
Chris

Re: Crane and Chipper Workshop a Success!

It was a great workshop! Sue and I both got some good information out of it! I learned the tail on my load line is anchored incorrectly(and passed it's OSHA inspection that way) and that the wire rope should not be brazed on the end. I think Altec's chipper safety bar is a much better set-up than the cables on our Brush Bandit. And for those that weren't there you should have seen all the food they had for us!!! They had a breakfast spread, a huge lunch spread and snacks in between and in the afternoon!! Excellent job Tim!! And good to see you and AllMark again and nice meeting Chris Girard. Sue and I are both looking foward to the Rigging Workshop. Tim keep us updated on those slings! I untied the last pick, and even though it was only around 1200lbs, I could see how easy it is to untie.

Re: Crane and Chipper Workshop a Success!

Thanks Kman, Sue, Chris and Mark,

To answer MB's question from the other discussion:

The best thing that I learned was that women make better crane operator's than men! Of course, Kman and Sue already knew that.

The best thing for the industry was the relationship that we are building with OSHA. I will continue the discussions with them about cranes. They had some good comments and questions themselves.

The best question asked was one that I didn't realize at the time: one of the CHSO’s asked if it would be better to use a locking shackle to attach my false crotch to. I think that this is an important question because he is thinking about making our system better/safer, which means that he thinks that there is merit to what we do.

I will post what I can as things move forward with OSHA and the dates for the rigging workshop as well.

Thanks again for all who made the trip.
