Just wondering what everyone thinks about having "tree service" or "tree care" at the end of their company name. I'm possibly starting a new business and not sure which one to use or which is more appealing to the public

It could also be a state specific requirement. Here in CT, in order to call yourself a "Tree Service" or similar, you MUST have a state licensed arborist on staff and on record with the state. It's the law, and yes they do try to enforce it, but it's a never ending battle. Without an arborist, you may call yourself "Brian's Tree Removal", but you must NOT do any pruning, fertilizing, spraying, etc, etc. You are limited to only complete removals and stump grinding.

Do I think the average homeowner in CT understands the difference? Not a chance - a tree guy is a tree guy, right?
 
Little revival on this thread. I'm thinking of using using Property Management or Maintenance. I'm leaning towards management. I would love to use Arbor Works or Care but I also do roofing and other construction related jobs when they arise. Any thoughts or advice on this?

I hear ya. It does sound lame. Been kicking these thoughts around for awhile now. It's time for me to act soon though ..... Like asap. Maybe I should use Contracting on the end. Doesn't sound well with Green Acres, which I really want to use. @tc262 what do you use for a biz name?

When I started, I went with Tree and Landscape, aiming to get started with diverse work, and possibly develop a landscape end in the future.

I've been told the Landscape has turned some people away.

You could do something that sounds tree/nature-y, with "...Professional Services/ Services", "...Contracting" (a la Carl),

Big Oak Professional Services.


If you go with Tree Care, some people will think you "only trim trees". Tree Care and Removal is more encompassing, but leaves out construction related service.

I like contracting, you could use a tag line you can always change to define what it is you do.

Green Acres Contracting doesn't sound too bad.
 
We went with Tree Care because we felt it would help qualify of prospective clients. They know that we value trees and will do what is possible to care for them. If removal is the best solution then so be it. And it really hasn't hurt our business in that area.

When I initially switched from mowing to primarily tree work, I actually changed the name of the business to my tree company's name and kept mowing for a while. People who need their yard cut don't typically care if you're even a business, much less what your business name is. However, knowing what I know, id hire what I perceive to be a dedicated tree company before I hired a "landscape" company they also did trees.

I just registered a business name two weeks ago and had the same thought. We went with A&S tree solutions thinking that would cover all aspects of tree work.
