Hopper you are smart! It is definitely the base layer that makes all the difference. I use winter grade under armour. The stuff is amazing!!

X2, Under Armour is the way to go. It doesn't alow you to feel a draft since it is skintight, then it breaths when you are warm.

I was felling trees in the woods (logging) 2 days ago. Snow was 10+ inches and I was carrying the 660 with a 25" bar. Long story short, I worked all day in it (drizzle)and didn't have an ounce of moisture on me or the shirt when I took it off at night, where with cotton I would have been cold and soaked. With Under Armour you stay dry and warm while not carrying around the bulk.

UA does work, but it is way over-priced...in my opinion.

Head to Sierra Trading Post, http://www.sierratradingpost.com/ and load up on more clothing for a lot less money.

The easiest way to stay warmer in cold conditions is to reduce the amount of cotton clothing that is worn.

Take a minute and read about how synthetic fabrics move sweat from your skin out to the air to be evaporated. If the water stays in vapor form it moves easily. Once it condenses it takes a LOT more energy to move liquid or to heat it up to make it a vapor again. We feel cold because the heat from our body is being wasted revaporizing water.

Another key is to vent when your body feels warm. Having shell layers, and wicking layers if possible, with pit zips makes blowing off heat [and moisture] really easy.

MOdeling winter clothing on mountaineering, skiing or other activities rather than on construction clothing will keep anyone warmer. Like other people have said, the tech gear lasts a long time too. We don't compromise on our tools why compromise on clothing. Clothing is a tool that needs to work as hard for us as ropes and saws.

Just my Pfanners and a sweather under my jacket and then work hard to keep me warm

Re: Cold blast between jacket and pants when climb

At a recent workshop on human factors and ergonomics the speaker told of an increase of MSD injuries due to restrictive clothing in the construction industry?

Are we so different with some of our clothing choices?

Another point with cold weather is this is a risk factor for developing a Musculoskeletal injury.

Think of our muscles as silly putty. When silly putty is warm how flexible and malleable is it? Take that same silly putty and put it in the freezer for a half hour or so and see how flexible it is then.

Stay warm, stay healthy, and stay safe.

When using bibs the quilted ones are very different from the flannel lined ones....I have the flannel lined ones and climbed in them today...and bulk was not a problem and I moved just fine...on the other hand my buddies at school have the quilted ones and they cant even move when we climb in class

Re: Cold blast between jacket and pants when climb

Both the Mountain Hardware and EMS System 3 bibs are rugged and streamline, offer flexibility and breathability, and will last several seasons. TCI Mag Dec. issue has a shot of some tool modeling the EMS bibs. Pfanner also makes a nice bib. The above mentioned bibs will not restrict movement aloft of on the ground and are loaded with features.

Re: Cold blast between jacket and pants when climb

Don't laugh guy's but last year when it was pretty cold one day I put on thermal cycling bib tights over pants and it worked really good. I have ones with windstopper fabic on the legs and thermal fabic goes up the back and chest and it felt like is was summer. They will not restrict movement and aren't bulky.

Re: Cold blast between jacket and pants when climb

when I get real cold I put on the big yellow over alls and craNK THE HEAT

Re: Cold blast between jacket and pants when climb

Patagonia guide pants! Invest in some good base layers...it's worth it for sure. It always cracks me up when my coworkers try to climb in carhart bibs...and then complain about how miserable it is. Even going from arborwear pants to a stretch material makes a world of difference
