Climbing on Swivels

Just wondering what everyone thinks about using a swivel in a climbing system. I have been considering using one on my bridge for a while but just have some reservations on using it.

I've been on a swivel for a very long time. I recently tried using a ring and dmm xs bat rigging plate but just couldn't get comfortable with either of them... I think I made it a week. The swivel is just simply more versatile.

I use swivels at both ends of my DdRT setups (I access tree gaffs or SRT and set anchors) and am just starting to incorporate them into the SRT setups, too. Really makes things go more smoothly in the tree.

Definitely do it. With the small DMM swivel, you can utilize the lower half to prevent yourself from swiveling should that be more convenient. Although I'd imagine it would wear the bridge faster than a swiveling pulley like the Rock Exotica hydra/rook

Get an omni swivel mini block and never look back. I weigh 268 pounds and climb everyday on it. I use this with a hitch climber combo and absolutely love it for every thing. It also comes with a set screw so you can secure it permanently. It has a back up catch in case you some how open it also. Pretty much fail proof.

I use a rock exotica rotator, and a RE orbitor. Great products, they can pass the gate of a biner, which is important to me. I never climb without a swivel. Makes my life easier.

For certain systems I prefer a swivel others I don't. With any hitch system (hitch climber, wrench, etc) I like the ring. I never really liked the swivel there for what ever reason but with any mechanical device I want a swivel just to get it in the right position to operate without having to twist it around as hard if that makes sense. I find my line twists just as much with the swivel though so that part is of no difference to me.

I loved my orbitor swivel with my hitch climber system to keep the twist ups to a minimal but since goin with the zigzag (which has a built in swivel) iv considered going back to just a ring. My RE orbitor swivel ate my petzl bridge real quick, prolly less then 6 months. Which I sent to petzl and they think it was because of the swivel and not a mfg defect. Just a heads up on my half.

I'd love to try a pulley swivel like the omni but never thought the pulley would do much till seeing what the swivel without a pulley did to my bridge. [emoji383][emoji383]

I change my bridge about every three monthd. It only a couple feet of rope and 3 or 4 dollars is worth piece of mind to me. No were with swivel pulley. Always ran a hitch climber pulley on my bridge before omni was released.

Hey, Simpleiowaguy! Do you have a favorite cordage you use for your bridge replacements? Or is it more like "I just use whatever is handy"? Thanks in advance for any answer you choose to give in this regard.

Tried a ring with SRT and it was OK, but then I put a swivel on and it just felt better (more fluid). I used a DMM small swivel last year and my bridge wore a slight groove in to it. I've since moved to a Black Diamond Rotor and am much happier with it.

My DMM swivel wore quickly, my rock ex one is still looki g good.

i like to use platinum, the construction seems really solid. I know a lot of people use sixteen strand with the core removed.
