Climbing alone?

At what point (height) do you legally need to have a 2nd person there when you are climbing in case an aerial rescue is needed?
I always climb in 2's, but someone asked the other day what the safety standard is and damned if I can't find the answer.

So, whether, legally, OSHA, ANSI or just plain ole recommended, how high can someone climb before they need another guy (or gal) there to be able to do aerial rescue if needed? 10 feet? 25 feet? 50 feet?

Thanks everyone in advance if you can help!

8.1.2 A second arborist, an arborist trainee, or other worker trained in emergency procedures
shall be within visual or voice communication during arboricultural operations above 12
feet (3.65 m) that are not subject to the requirements of subsection 4.2.4.

When questions like this come up its good to find out what the workplace regulations say. Since most regs are based on someone's death they seem to make sense.

There's another place to find answers. Ask your wife/husband/children/friends if they think that what you're planning is safe.

"...or other worker trained in emergency procedures

So if I'm in a tree and the tree owner is nearby and is trained to call 911 per need, does that comply?

O and does cell phone range count for voice communication?

this is all just hypothetical mind you...

I have always wondered what, "trained in emergency procedures" means? is it basic CPR first aid? someone capable of calling 911? or what?

I've climbed alone a few times and really don't like it. Being on a university campus there is a lot of foot traffic and the second worker is necessary to direct people. Often times the second worker for me is a student worker and some of them I don't trust of be able to respond to an emergency, but my boss still expects me to climb with them on the ground. What have you'll done in situations like this? Looking for advice here? I have shown my boss the ANSI 8.1.2 but nothing has changed.

I'm dealing with the same problem. Students and temps make up the crew on most jobs. I deal with the students like I do any other help and train them. Every job starts with me going over what is going to be done and how. Tasks are assigned based on experience and necessary ppe is given to those who need it. They are all shown where the first aide is and instructed how to call for help. All of this takes maybe 10 minutes.
