climbers

Have you ever had a new guy on the crew who was supposedly a climber and then he has a panic attack once he gets 12 feet up?? I think that is sooooooooooo funny.

More times then I would like to admit.

There is some dark humor there for sure.

What I always wonder is how the new hire could get so far through the hiring process before being found out. Were references checked? Were the claims of X-years of experience audited in any way? Could the climber tie a selection of common knots on the ground without pressure? How did they set their line and tie their climbing system?

I agree but it happens all the time, people learn a little at one company then go to another and talk their way into a position. Then they get put in a position that they cant handle because of their lack of experience and training.

Very funny! Recently a local company called us about a guy that used to work for us, after he worked for them for a few weeks. He had done primarily PHC and I had showed him the very basics of climbing. I would let him do some very easy prune jobs when we were not under the gun to finish the job. He had represented himself as having three years climbing experience.

The lesson here: before you hire a climber, ask a few simple questions, make them tie a couple knots, and maybe watch them climb a tree. You should have a good idea of what they can do.

I usually get the calls that say "I'm a climber. I can do anything on spurs." To which I say, I really need a climber that can prune." Then I hear, "I just use those short spikes for prunes."

For some, the climbing system and knots boils down to strap four straps on spurs, clip carabiner to one d-ring, and snap the snap on the other d-ring.
