Actually we go to the 70s in the summer and we are also the land of the midnight sun. June 21st you can watch the sun go down and come back up without ever disappearing. We get very few hours of darkness. Yes it gets pretty chilly in the winter but our summers are enjoyable. People travel long ways to come here for the fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities. If you haven't seen it yet then you should consider it for a season!
 
I had a chap by the name of Mike from Alaska stay here for a while last year.

He showed me plenty of pics and helped out with the Iditarod thing. He was in McGrath, now that's pretty isolated.

Sure is a pretty wild place, it would be a good stint away from the big smoke to work a while there.
 
One of my sisters lived in Healy for a few years, a couple of times (her ex is still there, and that's why he's her ex twice). I don't know how that compares to Anchorage, but from what I understand of the cost of living, twenty bucks won't go very far. Does the state still pay residents a stipend, as opposed to income tax, to live there?
 
Yes, we get an annual stipend (about $900 per person now which is low compare to what we got a few years back). No sales tax, no income tax. The cost of living in Healy would be way higher than Anchorage. Any place out there would be but Anchorage is the biggest city and it is not that much more than some other places in the lower 48. $20+ per hour is pretty good, you can easily live on that. Just hard to get people to understand we don't still live in igloos here!
 
If I weren't married I'd pack my things in a blurred manner and climb my [what???] all the way off for you up there. Not kidding even a little as long as my pay was accurate and you didn't make me liontale, use spurs to prune or embarass my beloved industry we'd have a deal right now. I hope you find your person soon. whiz
