Chin straps on hard hats

why don't they make more all around helmets with the hardhat part still on top? I mean say you slip, take a swing??? I've had some really really severe head injuries (from BMX, not tree work!) even while wearing a helmet, and It seems like my helmet for climbing (petzl ecrin) wouldnt do anything for side impacts. I know its not normal to have this, but as climbers, it seems we should.

If chin straps will be mandated, what about proper footwear?

Pretty stoopid to make people wear leg protection, but they can wear almost any style of flimsy assed hiking boots. IMO an actual work boot should be required.

Johnny Boots,

Read OSHA, proper foot wear is required. What 'proper' means is left to a bit of discretion.

Chin straps won't be in this revision of the Z. Get ready for the next one...five years from now.

During my tenure on the Z, I made it my mission to try and bring the document into the electronic age. To no avail I might add. It made and stil makes sense to me to create the ANZI Z133 in a digital form, and available to the public online. This way, even for a fee, it would be more readily available to those that needed it. It could also be updated more frequently than every 5 or 6 years. For the most part, due to the current process, once the new revision is printed there are already changes that should be considered. If the Z committee would make the jump to the modern day world, changes could be made every 6 months or less. Just my thoughts.

I'm gobsmacked that its not. I just kind of assumed it was. I've red the hard copy so never checked for it online.

I know the what the Z says Tom.....

the question is what's proper? What makes a hiker any safer than a running shoe? IMO nothing.

I used to work for bartlett when they only gave their climbers basic construction hard hats. A couple of years ago they switched to Petzl best climber helmets with a chin strap. They weren't required though and a few guys still kept wearing the old style hard hats. personaly I hated not having a chin strap to keep the helmet on. You take a gamble without it. All it takes is a small jarring and that thing comes off. Can't tell you how many times as a groundie I had to tie fallen hard hats onto climbers lines.
