Chaps or pants

I am just wondering if it is possible to climb in wrap around chaps. I have my pair for when I am on the ground cutting but have yet to try them while climbing on rope or spurs. I could buy pants but since I do alot of my climbing and trail maintenance after work it would be easier to just use my chaps if you guys think it is a safe practice. Also alot of the time I am only trimming with my Silky so having pants on would mean I was stuck in them until I went home, or changed in the woods. However in public parks getting nsked in the woods is a bad idea, lol.

I teach Arboriculture at Paul Smith's College and we make our students wear chaps in the tree (or chap pants) and nobody really likes them. I think the pants are a better option and I have owned several pairs. I suggest getting the ones made specifically for climbers as they are much more comfortable.

Pants. I was given the option when I first started but realized the pants are more comfortable. Once you get accustomed to wearing them all the time then you'll find it hard to climb without them on. The big advantage is you'll always be protected.

Pants are better than chaps, but there is a huge cost difference. Besides the straps getting hung up on stubs and nubbins I don't see any safety concerns with wearing chaps in a tree. I also feel that pants give better protection, but I haven't had the opportunity to test (luckily). For comfort, and maneuverability pants are the way to go. I also wear something for the entire work day. If I only needed saw protection for 1-3 hours out of the day I would consider going back to chaps..

The chap pants can be hot in the summer, but where I live I get at least nine months of use out of the pants. when you figure in the cost of regular "work" pants wearing out, the convenience and safety of the chap pants seem a no brainer. I get at least a couple of years out of the chap pants vs. only several months out of "work" pants like carharts. I wear the chap pants all week and then wash them on the weekend!

I wear em year round. They're hot in the summer, but you get used to it. I've worn my new pfanners almost every day since TCIA expo in November and they are holding up real well.

Who are you? I just seen my 2nd in command prof at psc wrote an article that tcia mag published this month. Chaps suck and the pants are $$$...but who are you?!!!!!

They don't like it. Really, tell them to go into a different field. I'm sure firefighters don't like all that hot gear when they're walking around in the summer with it on. How about a surgeon wearing that mask and gown? Make it clear that in the work environment what they "like" or don't "like" is of no consequence. They will get use to pants for all day use. Learn to hydrate and cool yourself.

Lol...HI DAN! Chris from ohio...class of 01...been a while.

Talked to Treestuff today and ordered a pair of pants. Since 90% of the time I will be wearing them over jeans for just a couple hours per week we decided on some of the baggier generic pants. Kind of using them like chaps but without all the straps and buckles to get hung up on while climbing. Of course I had to order some extra stuff because, well....why not, lol. Thanks for all the input.

Hi Chris from Ohio, your going to have to give me more clues than that! that was a long time ago! or do I have to dig through the piles of papers to find an old class list? you must still be in the trees, thats good!

For what it's worth I Love chaps.
I've been waring chaps since my NZ days. In the summer I wear shorts under my chaps anytime i use a chainsaw. In spring and fall I'll wear work pants under my chaps. In the winter I wear chainsaw pants as they keep me warm.
But it's all your choice.
I never use a chainsaw on the job with out some leg protection.

Just got my Pfanner Ventilation saw pants in the mail from Treestuff!

Wow! What an awesome pair of pants. It's amazing how lightweight they are for saw pants.

Can't wait to climb in them tomorrow.

What a huge upgrade from the Husky pants I've been wearing intermittently for the last couple years.
