chainsaw carving out a niche

Guy had an article in the Oct 2008 arborist news about chainsaw carvings. I would like to learn. There are some communities around me that I think would eat it up like cabin/lake houses and second homes around the smokies etc.

Any advise on how to get started? I need to look into what tools will be needed. I think it would be cool to backlog a couple jobs for the winter months. I remember there was a logging instructor at the college I went to that did carvings on the weekend and I remember him saying a couple of them paid $1000+. But more than anything it would be for fun.

If you come over this way I'll take you to meet Karen Tiede, who was a major inspiration.

Dedicating one saw to carving, with the carving sprocket and bar, is a whole lot easier than swapping them out.

I'll keep that in mind, but what location between IL and FL are you usually at?

I have an old one I could designate for carving. I'm starting to think about winter projects like this.

I think most carvers and even log builders have gone to electric chainsaws.
