Anybody on here one? I’m toying with the notion of CTC or CA because I believe I should never stop learning. It’s just a personal goal and doesn’t matter in my part time work. I’m having trouble finding an event or anything close geographically. Is there anyway to maybe go train and test with someone? I’m pretty sure I would pass it but, I haven’t had AR or CPR training in years. I timed out in the work climb and AR at Geezers 2025. Craig

I finally got the CTC this past November, after about a year after the initial application. The written test was a breeze to schedule, but the skills portion was unavailable for quite some time. I believe most of that time was due to the rebranding ISA did and the local chapter was sorting through the information. Just this month they tapped the current credential holders to take the course to become an evaluator. I hear the plan is to have a skills exam every time a competition is held, separate from the competition itself.

Trying to find CPR and I guess I need the first aid part too. Red Cross has OSHA approved. I really would travel and pay someone that can sign me off on AR but, I may do it at ISA and ITTC Memphis. I’m waiting for details to come. But…what’s y’all’s opinion… should I just go for the CA instead?

I thought they did one at Geezers on the training day. You just have to have someone sign off on you completing an AR. Hopefully you can find somebody to climb with and get that accomplished.
I probably just need to find out who the judge was for the work climb. Maybe they could sign me off. I got the AR and CPR recently. I was just notified that my application was approved for the written test. WooHoo.

It is such a bummer to see how difficult it is to get this cert. I’m an evaluator and we have tried to get some leeway to set up a skills test locally besides at the climbing comp. Unfortunately the skills test has to be held during an ISA sponsored event and you can’t just test with an approved evaluator. Do you know of any Arborist Exams being held in your area? If there is one you can request to have them hold your written as well and then a skills test can be set up on the same day. The ISA should have to find a way to fly a couple evaluators your way to see that through.

P.S. Make sure you don’t forget about the knots test. Practice, practice, practice! Also, audibles are your friend!

It’s true that it’s harder than it should be. I know a couple people who have been climbing for years and let their certification lapse during Covid and haven’t been able to get it renewed. I had to resubmit my paperwork several times to get everything done. I really don’t see why I have to take the skills test anyway. Someone at the Geeezers comp should be able to sign me off. There isn’t any in my area and I’ll have to time the skills with the expiration date. Kinda tricky and yes it really needs to be more “convenient” to apply and obtain. I don’t agree with it having to be an event. I should be able to meet with an evaluator and get it done locally.

Let’s say you have to climb a heavily limbed tree… @TreeVB Regarding the movement from 20ft to final TIP. Is that just alternating between lanyard and system but, remaining tied in at least once? Say…throw rope to 35ft, climb up, then lanyard in and throw to final and start work? I’m not quite clear on the movement that the evaluator is looking for. Craig

That is correct. They want you to demonstrate you can safely/properly lanyard in and advance your TIP.

Well I passed the written exam this week.I’ve checked the ISA event list and NO skills exams are scheduled for the next year! I’m going to try to contact someone this week to see how they can setup a test. KY and AL competitions are coming up. I know if I compete, I can get a skills waiver but, I’m not a competitor type. I’ve spectated a few comps now and volunteered at Nashville. IMO the work climb at a comp is going to be difficult for a climber with 1 1/2 years experience. The Nashville work climb I helped set up was 68ft TIP and pretty wicked limb walks to all stations. Anyway I passed written. Craig
