Cat 3116 fuel system

Goin outa my flucking mind tryng to get mt truck running.
It turns over but isnt getting enough fuel to run.

The lower fuel filter was dated 2002 so I got excited and though they may be clogged. Changed them, (80 dollars)
Truck started and ran off the fuel I put in the filters and dies.....DANG IT!
So this mobile mechanic comes over and says its a bad fuel pump in the tank. He only charged me 20 bucks...cool
I procedd to pull out a 50 gallon tank that is almost full...fluckin heavy! Dissassemble the lines and pulled the top of what he said was a fuel pump out...HA HA HA...nope..its just a fluckin level indicator... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This is why I dont keep guns in the house.

Thank you Jim.
I will look again for damaged lines tommorrow.
As far as the electric pump goes...good idea but I am not sure how to go about that. Its dark now. I am hoping things will get better with the new day.
Is there no electric fuel pump on these cats at all?

Not familiar with the cat deisels but I had a similar problem with my duetz, return line had a small cut.

We did run an electric fuel pump in place of a mechanical on an a skidder years ago, the mechanical was big bucks, the electric was cheap and had plenty of power to push fuel.

I had a similar issue with my Isuzu. Truck ran, but then died.. mostly going uphills. They switched out the filter, but no go. Turns out, it was a fuel regulator. Easy, quick fix. Not sure if this would be an option for you

You probably got your truck running already, but here's my thoughts anyway.

First, what happened when it stopped running the first time. All the sudden cut off or went down in power gradually? Did anything happen out of the ordinary before the trouble started? Bad or dirty fuel or foreign objects in the tank (you probably got that clean if you had to pull the tank)?

Next, where is the "lift" pump located? Possibly it could be bad(how many miles or hours are on the engine?) if there is not a leak in the supply line letting air in between the tank and the pump. Did you prime the system after you changed the fuel filter? There should be a primer pump somewhere near the mechanical lift pump on the engine or near the secondary or primary fuel filter. You didn't run out of fuel first did you? You know that running out of fuel presents a whole new set of issues to get an engine started. My boss did that on one of our trucks last winter, that was not fun to get going again. The more information to go with, the easier it is to get a correct troubleshooting diagnosis. Good luck.

Hey Ben, it was air in the lines. Started with a bad filter then things got worse when I put in the wrong replacement.
The mechanic also found a couple of other air leaks.
Back in action. Thanks everyone for your input.
Good news is that I managed to get my dump box stripped and repainted while the truck was down.
