Cash

I've been kicking this topic around with a few other guys recently.

I'm wondering how common cash prizes are at the various comps? I know every comp is different.

All things being equal... would you rather have cash than other types of prizes? Does it matter?

In Michigan, years ago, if you were given cash by the chapter they had you sign for it to keep a paper trail I think. Sometimes companies or individuals would drop $100. or $50. and that was always cool. I dig prizes over cash ANY day though. Back in '96 Sir Tree Rat helped me load a pole pruner diagonally through my Pontiac Sunbird like stickin' out the window. It was too funny for words and worth WAY more than cash to me. Still have to pruner too.

Charlotte has the largest cash prize I've heard of. This year they had a $1,000 cash prize.

Personally, I would prefer the cash prize over other prizes, or because I could then spend it on a specific piece of gear. Even gift cards would be great, because it doesn't limit your selection of gear.

In Illinois, we give cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd place in the Masters for men and women.

Cash might be good at the moment, but it has a tendancy to dissappear with little show for it.

GOOD prizes are cool, years later the memory & pride is still there. There's a satisfaction in using a tool/gear that you "won" for being good at what you do.

LAME prizes though are....well....lame.

That's a nice pile of cash.

In my opinion gift cards are better than cash! That way your sure that it goes back into the Tree Industry, while cash may be spent else where. I love to get prizes but sometimes they aren't up to par for more advanced climbers. Such as, i got a Lanyard made out of Gold Streak with a micro ascender and a steel snap. I think it was a great prize, but besides the micro ascender i probably won't use it. Most climbers that are at the level to win events or competitions probably like their gear customized to them. Its hard to supply prizes that everyone might want, thats why i think gift cards are so practical.

In the future (near term) I see the day when the top finisher of a local TCC could earn thousand(s) of dollars.

It's all a matter of asking the right manufacturers to kick in the dough, and of course making it worthwhile to the manufacturers. Signage, logos on shirts, all of this has been done for other sports.

If any TCC chair is interested in the secret of the CAA TCC, just hit me up.

I agree. Like any sport it is all about interest level and the number of eyeballs.

NICE! by that time I'll be coming into my prime and be a full jedi tree climber rater than just the padawan I'm now!!!!!

My 2cents the prizes need to be Good. Prizes that a climber of the caliber it takes to win the prize will use. Like 16 stand ropes are nice but they go straight to being lowering lines. But say a blakes hitch split tail or double d saddle will probably never be used. And most of our stuff is custom or semi custom anyway. I like the gift card idea. A tree motion would be nice hint hint!!!!
