Carabiner Recall!

A recalled product related to US Rigging? You don't say?! How could that be?! North America's largest importer of CHEAP CRAP FROM TAIWAN!!!

Remember the "Sherrill" aluminum ring recall? Or has that been conveniently forgotten and swept under the rug by now? Kong rings, right? maybe? ...Kong probably had them made by King Snaps http://www.kingsnaps.net/ . US Rigging is the exclusive North American importer of Kong products http://www.usrigging.com/ , http://www.kongusa.net/ . Looks like the swivel carabiner in question came directly from Taiwan.

US Rigging's website/catalog states that they are a manufacturer of wire rope, and a DISTRIBUTOR of other hardware. Are Kong and US Rigging distributing products from, and/or having products made in Taiwan? If so, where is the traceability? Do the products say "made in Taiwan"? How are they tested and where? US Rigging states that they test 'in house'.

I'm gonna get a little far-out-there-speculative and compare the US Rigging recalled swivel krab (USR 176 A3T) with this... http://www.kingsnaps.net/index_down.php?...amp;searchname= from the King Snaps website. #ALP85-22176-3T. This is the only swivel krab with 176 in the ID. The mark 3T seems to denote a triple action gate. http://www.kingsnaps.net/index_down.php?...=2&Submit=3

Demand transparency and traceability in your life support products!!! Spend a few extra dollars and buy quality, individually marked hardware.

P.S. I love the little pseudo disclaimer in the recall: "...with excessive wear outside of industry standard use." Ha!

I understand that products get recalled for many reasons. However, you are asking for trouble when you deliberately compromise quality and integrity by trying to save a buck, or make a buck.

My interpretation is that it's not a recall, just a "safety inspecting warning notice". The offer is only to repair or replace devices with missing pins.

Yeah, I saw that part too. Not impressed. I'd rather be able to send it back then have it fail later on.

Thanks Mark, I'll have to talk to Vince.

"Safety Inspecting Warning Notice"... who coined that phrase?

I bet they also have TPS reports.

I have an ISC swivel carabiner with a single pin through it. The pin diameter is ~0.1 and is mushroomed to ~0.12. If a mushroom somehow wore off, the pin would fallout. It moves easily in its hole. I don't know if that amount of wear is possible but if the mushrooms were completely recessed you wouldn't have to think about it.

I haven't seen the US carib up close. Seems surprising that both pins can go missing.

Here is some more info:

Dear Customer

We have just been informed that a safety recall notice has just been issued by US Rigging for their aluminium swivel karabiner. Please see it attached.

We want to move quickly to assure our customers that this product is in no way associated with our KH255 swivel karabiner. This is a problem that we identified many years ago and make sure that all our swivel karabiners (whether aluminium, steel or stainless) use a solid pin fitted right through the body of the karabiner and permanently riveted on both sides. This means that the pin is permanently captivated and cannot fall out. The likelihood that the mushroom head on the rivet would wear away under normal use thus releasing the pin is practically zero - riveting is a method that has been successfully and safely used by ISC in karabiner manufacture for years and we have never come across any such incident.

As with all ISC products careful and thorough product development based on years of experience allow us to design out potential short-comings. Strict Quality Control including a 100% check on all products gives you the confidence to know that your ISC product surpasses all International Standards requirements.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

Wayne Ellis

Yeah I heard about it from Northeastern too. They said some guy got to the top of a tree and was about to tie in when the biner just fell apart. Crazy, I've been using that biner on my bridge for a few years and haven't noticed anything unusual.
