Bungee Ball Cord

Anybody ever seen these? I found some packed away in my shop and the prices are cheap online. Mine are the 8" version and when untied, the bungee is about 20" long and easily stretches to 42"

I'm thinking remove the bungee cord, it looks perfect for a rope walker system (like the HAAS) and the ball could be used for fiction saver retrieval.

Cheap might not be what you want to put a lot of time and effort behind. I have some that look like that; and others. Have seen china stamped on so many bags that I assume all come from there and the rubber and exterior break down fast to rather fast.
What about looking for highest quality possible? I bought some nice quality cordage by the foot from REI on a number of occasions. American sourced and lasted a long time even out in the sun.

Not all balls are created equal either. Look at how much meat is on the pulling wall of an “arb” sourced ball (or many) as compared to those.

Jim,
I am going to take some photos of my left leg system and e-mail them to you. I did not pull that trick out of the bag when you were here on purpose. I didn't want to overload you at one time. Watch your e-mail over the next few days.

Merle, I got a little excited when I found those because of the double duty I pictured in them. Appreciate the advice though. I did notice, after those bungee balls had been sitting in the outdoor shop for years, the red bungees were in good shape. There were some longer black ones that were crumbly and had lost all elasticity.

I have since ordered some marine grade bungee and plan to attempt a HAAS type system with it. I already tried with a Petzl Croll, and the splice actually wasn't that big of a deal, around the ascender anyway. The bungee I had wasn't long enough but I did manage to get it down into the tenex. Where/how to terminate it? Now that is the question.

jwp, when/if I get it finished I'll be glad to post up a pic.

TreeLogic, Where did you get the Marine grade bungee? I'm very curious how it works out for you. The bungee sold at Tree-stuff for my knee ascender works, but doesn't have the stretch I want to capture progress efficiently.

Bungee does not last very long, its good to have a roll of it, so you double it for more elastic etc.

That marine stuff looks good.

The bungee balls are everywhere, different names such as 'tarp ties' 'tie downs' etc etc...

There are loads of different sized balls, so worth a check first.

The bungee balls don't work well for FS retrieval. They are usually cheap plastic and fashioned in two pieces, which ultimately break apart. So many better options.

I have been using this (photo attached) neck lanyard for a long time, no loss of stretch.

I think I think West Marine has the best selection of shock cord

I too have looked for bungee that has the performance characteristics we need for ascender type applications. Most bungee does not have the amount of stretch we require, where a certain amount of pull over a given distance must be performed by a fairly short length of bungee.

I found I would stop in the tie down isle of any hardware type store I was in and check out the bungee straps. Finally found some that was significantly better and bought a handfull for future projects.

I suggest keep trying local stuff on shelves till you find something superior.

Any one try latex rubber tubing found at most stores that sell fishing stuff??. I found that it has a huge amount of stretch to it. Have to put it inside something like tenex or webbing to protect it from abrasion and sun.

I use exercise tubing or surgical tubing that you can get at a drug store. Comes in different sizes. Not fancy, but works great as rope walker set up.

Surgical and exercise tubing. Makes sense. Works for the big shot.
Do they really make a small enough diameter to fit inside 3/8 tenex though?

They come in all sizes so I'm sure you could find something that would fit. It's not for life safety application so as long as it doesn't snap when it's being stretched twice it's length it will be fine. They wear out but it's easy, cheap and quick to replace.
I just put a section of the tube through a straight portion of a 3/8th tenex loopy no problem. The tube is hollow in the middle and compresses. Next time I get some extra tenex I'll make one up that's covered.
