Bull Creek Redwoods

Over the weekend Terri and I hiked through the trails in Bull Creek, and took a few pictures with my new digital camera.

The lighting was contrasty for the most part, but in spite the automatic features on the camera did pretty good. This was the first time I really got to use the camera in the woods. I'm happy with it.

We took the Mini Lilly cabin at the Redwoods River Resort, stoked the fireplace and had New York steak and a fine red wine.

Our weekend in the woods was a qualified success.

The second to last photo you posted Jerry, is my favorite in this batch.

Last visit was the the 3rd time for me. Started at Tall Tree and then did some bushwhacking on both sides of Bull Creek.

Tait, let me know when you plan to come out and I'll try to make the time to show you some of the best. All you got to do is do it. I always enjoy the hikes.

Mario, I figured you'd recognize the setting in that pic. That was the area Terri and I covered Sunday morning. 7 hours wasn't enough time to cover it all. So we'll have to go back and pick up where we left off.

Terri and I really want to go to Look Prairie, but 10 miles one way is a little more than my feet can handle in one day. Would have to camp out. Make a 3 dayer out of it. That would be the only way to really see and record it right.

Hey Ger!! wow!! I would consider that a high honor!!I would absolutely LOVE to do that with you!! I spend days looking for excuses to get in the woods myself,I think it gives a man good perspective.I would imagine w trees that mighty the perspective would be even greater?!
My wifes sister lives in LA,We have been runnin some numbers on airfare.I told my wife id go but only if I could see the Redwoods and connect w some friends!! Id like to see Sohner as well ......in his native habitat!? Ill be sure to keep you in the loop ,and thanks for the kind thought!!

How is the weather out there in say - January - Feb time frame?

Up in Prairie Creek or Jedediah Smith redwoods, quite a bit of rain, fog, mist. But I never did get rained out. Had to take an umbrella on the trail once when I didn't bring rain gear.

Honestly, if you can catch the redwoods in winter on a cool moist non-rainy day, or light rain day, it may be one of the optimum times to experience the redwoods.

But it's serious rainfall country. Orick and Crescent City, CA, get almost 70 inches of rainfall per year, the lion's share between October and May. Near Orick, up on the hill of Redwood National Park, I heard that the rainfall can be upwards of 90 inches per year.

Autumn and winter are my favorite seasons in the redwoods.

I prefer a semi overcast day for taking pic's in the woods. It brings out detail in the shadows and softens the highlights. But as far as the rain goes I draw the line. I've tried the umbrella trick. It's ok if you stick to the trails, but the best pictures are not on the trails.

Stop in Phoenix and pick me up, I too have always wanted to witness a Sohner in his natural habitat.

Especially for you since you love the photography aspect. For me, I'd prefer a day without rain too, especially in winter.

One redeeming aspect for folks from abroad, is being able to capture something for memories in any weather. The photo below you recognize - not Bull Creek flats. It was raining lightly the moment this image was taken. Hand-held. Not as crisp as you are accustomed too. This is one of the few rainy day photos I have around.

That tree escapes me, Mario. Nice exposure and composition. A mighty fine pic of a large redwood. That pic would make a postcard.

If it's just mist and drippy I don't mind it so much. But walking through those ferns when they're wet will soak you in nothing flat.
