i just bought a f-450 that has a homemade chip box that was built on top of the existing landscape dump. the problem is the weight and the height. it is nearly 11.5 feet high and they used a pretty heavy gage steel. I need to bring it down to around 10 feet and replace the heavy top with a lighter metal. I need some suggestions on the type and gage of replacement matierials. i was thinking of using diamond plating but am open to any suggestions.

thanks,

Chips weigh about 500 pounds per yd so factor that in.

What does the truck weigh empty?
What is the GVW of the truck?
I would start there. Don't forget the tongue weight of the chipper too.

That truck must have been originally built to haul leaves from fall clean-ups.

I made my top out of a mesh tarp that big dump trucks use off ebay. I had to sew it togother to make it smaller but it's been prefect the last 2 years and very light.

The mesh is a good idea if you want to have front-end loader service, like dirt, rocks, mulch, etc.

The strong top is good for standing on if you have to do street clearance, sometimes.

Why the lighter top? is it just overkill? Can you just cut 1.5 feet out of the walls and reweld? Probably something you've thought about. Is it for removability?

It would probably help the fabricating folks here if you gave measurements and intended purposes (if anything besides being a top to the container).

I completely fabricated my entire bed for my F-800. I used 12 ga plate for the floors. 16 ga with 2x4 tube frame 24" on center for the walls (works ok for chips but of hauling alot of logs would go 14ga).
The top I wanted to be able to take off by hand for crane jobs so it is lightweight. 1"angle frames 4'x8' with 20 ga and it bolts to the top rail of the sides. It works well but not perfect the 20 ga is hard to weld. I ended up tackng it and then sheet metal screwing it to be a little more secure.
