Bug ID

is that an ovipositor behind it (long skinny black line)?
Looks like some type of wasp, but could it be a stumphumper of some sort? /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Looks to me like a Giant Ichneumon wasp (Megarhyssa macrurus) There are so many Ichneumons, I can't be sure what it is, but this is my guess. How big was it? Did it fly slow and clumsy, or was it swift?

great, I'm glad to now know what those wasps are called! I have several of those yellow ones (as in the picture) in my insect collection. However this year I saw and caught another one I had never seen before. Definitely another Ichneumon but it was black/blue (like a mud dobber wasp color) and had bright yellow antenae. He was cool. Nice to know the name now.

Can anyone give me any good web sites or books that they found or are finding to be useful in identifying trees and their common pests and diseases? I'm doing a few projects that I'm having trouble finding enough pests for.

Thanks!! /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I just completed an entomology class this past semester.... There are a lot of books out there, one of the best I found is "Insects That Feed On Trees and Shrubs" by Warren Johnson and Howard Lyon.

There are also some great websites out there:

Forest service pest alerts

Major forest pests

Just do a search on what your looking for, there is limitless information out there!

Hope this helps
