Broken collar bone

Hi all,

I got into a bicycle accident about a week ago. I crushed my right clavical and fractured my scapula. The doctor told me 10 to 12 weeks for a full recovery, and at least 8 before i can try to climb again. The problem is, I can't wait that long to go back to work. (Bills don't tend to pay themselves.) I would like to go back to being a groundie ASAP. However, I fear that with only one arm I will not be of much use. So my question is this:
Has anyone else gone through this injury?

How long did you stay home?

What did ya do to make yourself usefull?

Did you experience any set backs that I should watch out for?

- Thanks.

A skilled worker with one arm can still do a lot! Talk to your boss about it. You might have to work at a reduced pay level. Talk to your doctor and physical rehab people. A lot of people look to these professionals to stay out of work as long as possible. Let them know your angle is wanting to get back to work asap and to do as much as you can just short of interfering with your healing process.

I had to work with only one arm for awhile... I kept bumping my bad arm, ouch! You can still run a GRCS or porty and drag brush with one arm. That's a long recovery, but look at the bright side, you don't have to rake!

The Altreeist went through this a couple of years ago.

Did an Endo over the front handlebars and snapped his clavical in two. I know that you want to be careful about returning too early and stressing out that collarbone.

I'll let him know you had this same injury, and maybe he can give you some good advice.

I lent him my la-z-boy recliner for the duration of his recovery, it was the only way he could sleep.

Hope you heal up fast!

Nic Thune! Welcome! And sorry to hear about your injury. One arm ain't too bad. You could bench grind lots of chains.

I broke both of my collar bones bike riding. Doc told me to use a clavical brace and NO sling. He said with your arm in a sling being totally immobile you will not addapt to the PAIN.

My La-z-boy has, with out a doubt, gotten a lot more use than usual.

I spoke with my boss and he wants me to come back and train some newer guys on shrub pruning. That should work out fine, although I may need to rake up a bit. I guess I'll just take it easy and try not to aggravate the injury. Ya just gotta love pain.

Thanks for the help.

I broke mine back when I started. Just dont get in a position for sudden moves,..I re broke it 2x before it healed.

Broke both mine a year apart. Be careful, it may feel solid after 4-6 weeks it is not!

1st was bad, dirt bike crash shoulder hit a rock. Long recovery.

2nd was a sport bike crash into some grass with leathers, nice clean break, actually broke when picking up the bike.
6 weeks later I was back riding wheelies.

For real eat foods high in calcium or find a PLANT based calcium supplement. NON-organic calcium (like vitamins) does not work.

Non-organic is for plants
organic is for humans

I'm not talking about the methods of farming I'm talking about the form of the minerals.

Thanks for the info. It's been three weeks now and I'm starting to get a decent amount of movement back. There is still a lot of pain but I guess that is to be expected. My doctor told me to wait about 10 to 12 weeks to climb. That is going to be the hardest part. I'm back at work but just running the GRCS and dragging small brush.

FlashDog, how long did you wait before you could opperate a chain saw?

Broken bones can really hinder your productivity! My boss broke his leg a few weeks ago. He was not at work, just screwing around over the weekend. He took two weeks off from doing anything except making calls. He's been doing bids now but he still can't be on the job. I take that back, he's done a few micro-injections. He might be working from the bucket this fall but probably no climbing until winter. Being the only climber for the company is getting kind of old....

Nic, who do you work for?

Boley Tree and Landscape. Things are getting crazy round here too. We've lost a lot of good climbers to city work. I'm hoping that I'll be able to work out of the bucket in two weeks or so. It's hard to say though, I can't yet start a chainsaw. Just a matter of wait and see, and don't push it too much.
