anybody use any blocks other than the popular arborist blocks? There are quite a few of these type available used in my area, and I have seen them rattling around in logging rigs:

Im talking about the red one, on the right. Anybody use those for take-downs, wood rigging, etc?

Bearing blocks are very good for compression jigs for power; like 3:1 and 5:1. They cost much more usually; just to get that final, slick 10% more efficiency. But, as Kevin says they are more delicate, and once 'injured' they can easily be less efficient than cheaper, bushing blocks.

Another reason not to rig loads down with them; is that they may help in pretensioning; but do to higher efficiency, will actually give increased support loads (slightly) than less efficient , cheaper bushing blocks when lowering loads down.

The one on the right doesnt look like it is an "easy reeve" You would have to feed an end thru to start. Just a thought.

I use that same style block because around here they are less expensive compared to the bushing blocks. Mostly for re-directs for pulling trees...but sometimes for lowering bigger stuff. I find they are pretty bulky and wonder what they are like in contrast to bushing blocks in that regard. But I haven't had any problems so far...
