Using two rope grabs is only needed when using both ends of the lanyard simultaneously. When alternating between one end or the other, only one bidirectional rope grab is needed. When using a climbing lanyard with a single connection point, it's simply a matter of orienting the progress capture device in the right direction, using one end or the other and not both at the same time and in this instance, the bidirectional rope grab simply serves as a floating anchor point on the lanyard itself and not to capture progress, like a Grigri or a Cinch.
