best spurs

I am upgrading my spurs - last time I bought, Geckos were most recommended, but I couldn't afford them. This time I can. . .is there anything better out there that's in the same price range?

Buck titanium with super wrap pads/metal insert. Light, tough and comfy. Would not say better as I have never seen geckos but these are very good. As for being the best, most climbing equipment would be about personal preference and budget IMHO.

I use twisted shank Buck titaniums with footplates and Bashlin velcro wraps with the steel inserts. A friend of mine uses nearly the same set up but his velcro wraps came from Wesspur and are way more comfortable than mine, not sure what brand they are but they are rock solid. They could be Buckingham Big Bucks?

Only thing I would say is something tells me that Buck titaniums aren't really made of titanium?

Im not sure on how the geckos are going to be as far as lasting over the years, but right now I am using them and they are the best I have used yet. If I wanted to buy just one pair and never have to worry about buying another set I would probably go with the buckingham titaniums with aluminum style pads they are fairly light and comfortable although I like the geckos better. Im just not sure how long the fiberglass leg pads will hold up but I will buy them again if these ones I have ever wear out or break.

Bashlin aluminums or Buckingham Titanium. Either with full wrap velcro cinch pads and steal shin cup. I tried the original geckos once, on one tree. I actually came down before finishing the tree because I just was not comfortable on them (safety wise). I put my bashlins on and finished. It could have been I just wasnt used to them and the gaff angle.

IMO there are 2 kinds of discomfort;
1). Owww that hurts, but I can get it done.
2). Oh Crap am I going to live through this. (ie pucker factor)

I've got a few years on Geckos now and have found them great. When I first got them they didn't contact my shin at the right angle (top of the pad digging in, bottom not taking any weight) so I drilled another hole in the fiberglass offline from the others at the angle that seemed to be the best fit for me and it made all the difference.

I've got the Geckos, but they seem to fit low on my shin. I've maxed out the height, but the pad seems a bit too low, certainly lower than the height my buckinghams can be adjusted to. Perhaps the shin pads fit low and still provide good support? Before I sink them into a tree I thought I'd check, or maybe they are not for my lanky legs -I'm 6'1". Anyone with similar experience?

I have the originals and I guess I never thought about it. I'm 6'3" and while mine are maxed out too, it doesn't bother me that they ride a little low. I wear full shin guards under everything too though.

I am 6'5" and have the Gecko Carbon Fiber's because not only are they lighter but they are 'sized' not adjustable and the 'XL's, which I believe is for Extra Long not large are actually about 1.1" longer than the maxed out aluminum counterparts. as you know they want you to determine proper fit, measure (with boots on) from arch to just beneath knob of knee joint.
the CF XL's are 20" or 50.8cm
the alum adjust from 41 to 48 cm or 16.1" to 18.9"

Although 1.1" does not sound like a lot it can make all the difference in the world. I would say measure and see if that will help. I have about tho finger widths from top of my spur pad (hard part) to where the knob of my knee starts to roll out.....

Jeff I'm 6'4" and had the same problem but like I said in my other post I drilled another hole in the fiberglass cap to extend it another 3/8" or so and it works really well.

that's some great input people I appreciate it - I'm a little hesitant to drill a new hole, but if it comes to that I just might and I can always blame Gord. On a good day I can see you from over here on Gabriola! I feel sorry for all these poor firs I'm going to slay while riding in these spurs. . .well, not really all that sorry. . .

I agree...i have been using that set up for years...just replace the gaffs when needed and the for the padding that backs the aluminum i have a closed cell foam sleeping pad for backpacking that i cut two squares off and glue them to the aluminum about once a year...good as new

Edit: I had the geckos when they first came out...they were very comfortable too...i just prefer the bashlins with the aluminum pads

My Gecko Carbons are stellar but I still have great love for my Aluminum Stringer Brooks which I logged many hours on, would love to try some cadillac pads on them too. wonder if they would be as comfy as the Gecko's then?
