What rope you guys using for the spiderjack2 ? Ive been running samson blue streak 16 strand 12mm for natual crotch DRT, but was wondering about double braid lines being a bit smaller in dia. and wondering if they work well through the SJ2...

Thanks

I've had luck using poision ivy line w/ a tight eye. It self feeds very well through the SJ2. I would imagine a smaller Dia. line would work a little better for self tending though. Not sure about natural crotching though... I recommend using a friction saver of some sort to let that spiderjack show it's true performance.

rexman, thanks for the reply,
I think I will try smaller dia. rope, bluestreak doesnt seem to self tend to well....I wonder if a double braid will flaten out to much for the SJ2 like velocity hot?

Thanks

I really don't see the point of using a spiderjack if you are natural crotching. You've already sprung for the SJ now get yourself a Rope Guide and use the SJ like it is meant to be used.

X2... Or at least a FS. The natural crotch w the SJ kinda defeats the porpoise.

I see what you are saying, rope guide would be the bomb, good advice, but need a bit smaller dia. rope to fall through SJ easier, this should help, will see though...thanks

rocket line, tachyon, lava, poison ivy, the fly, choose your pick.

i think what your trying to achieve is self feeding and it will never happen until you use a friction saver. i used to be like you and natural crotch everything but i now use an adjustable ring and ring and have way more stamina in my arms throughout the work day. i dont see why anyone would climb natural crotch unless your moving up to a higher TIP.

I don't think a false crotch has anything to do with the spiderjack self tending. As long as your using the right rope it will tend no matter the crotch. I've also found it was much easier to learn the sj when using natural crotches.

Yep, moving up and all over old massive blue and valley oaks taking out dead limbs out of canopy....have to move TIP alot, friction saver would just take up to much time on these giants.

I will post pics of tree's so you can see what I mean.

Jeremy, finally someone that has likely used one and knows what he is talking about.

As far as self tending, you are pulling rope to the spider jack, it either flows through the spider jack or is does not.

It has nothing to do with the friction or lack of friction in the tie in point.

I have recently been using the spider jack 2 and didn't want to rant or rave about it yet, because it pisses me off still a bit right now.

I think once I find the correct biners so that there is not even the slightest non vertical alignment, it will help.

But I'm using 1/2" rope, which it says it acceptable, but i swear, half the time it will not self feed. i went to a new rope and it got better, but still won't feed all the time.

i need more time on it and i think i will get it worked out.

I did learn as I am hand over handing rope to it, if i take my fist of rope right to the spider jack, it helps a whole lot. Verses just hand over handing and not taking the hand smack up against the spider jack. If that makes sense.

X, What is your attachment setup your using now? I've attached 2 pics of how I attach mine. I've never had a problem with the rope feeding through the SJ2, no matter if it was tilted a bit sideways or straight up and down. Goes through like butter. As for over handing the rope, I stop my pulls a least 4" away from the device. If I pulled it any further my knuckles would rub the standing side of the line.

Picked up some BLUE MOON 11.7mm, will see how it works....

Blue moon looks to be the same spec. as Poison Ivy, but diff. color

Hi I have just bought a Spider jack 2.1 dyneema, but have yet to purchase a climbing rope, and was wondering what make and diameter would best suit the self tending properties of the device.

I've climbed my DdRT almost exclusively on an SJ 2.1 Dyneema for the past 12 mos. It's a great device. Used with 11.7 double-braids. Self-feeds very well once there is some rope weight. Somewhat finicky when close to the ground. It's ideal for big trees. However, I also really like it in ornamentals for the one-handed operation and position adjustment.

A couple notes:
- clean rope is best, as a dirty rope wears the cam much faster
- use the "feathering" lever, engage that first and put the friction there
- look forward to scaring yourself once in a while when you bump the lever with your elbow

Bought it second-hand for $200. Not sure I'd have laid out the cash for full retail. But in retrospect it would be worthwhile.
