Best <$500.00 ground saw

My buddy wants to get a new personal use saw, and said it has to be under $500.00 total.

He wants it to have an 18" bar and obviously have the nuts to pull a chain through good wood.

He is looking at the Dolmar 5105, he can get one for 500 cash and carry at our local shop.

I recommended a husky 545.

Let the opinions and bickering begin:

I am a fan of the "homeowner" Husqvarna saws much more than any others. I have had good luck with them, I have a 445 that has been nothing but abused and still works just as well as it did when I bought it new. The price was right and I could not pass it up. Has some nice features like a decompressor that some might like. I have both Stihl and husky pro saws and would never consider a mid use or homeowner Stihl I like the husky saws much better and more often than not they are cheaper. The 445 has never given me an ounce of trouble and I do not expect any from it anytime soon.

I say you did well on your recommendation. I have no Dolmar experience and don't intend to anytime soon haha.

I have a 445 too and it has been a fine saw. not the most powerful but does the trick. i believe it is in the professional line of huskys though. at least it was listed as such at lowes. the new on/off switch and choke system took some getting used to.

as far as husky homeowner versions, the 455 rancher has really pissed me off. i don't know why i kept buying them (probably because they were easy to get @ lowes) but they had so many problems. they all started out great but then went downhill quick. i'd stay away from that saw unless you just love working on saws. i've gotten refunds on all of them.

Sorry but if it was me and I only could have 1 saw I would be looking at bigger stuff , find a husky dealer that has some of the 365xt that he had for sale at $520 before they took the jump in price , there still out there as I bought 2 more this week

Something in jonsered's lineup. Can't help you with what, but know that these saws are husqys painted red. Weird but true, they have pro models for less than equivalent husqys. Cannot! figure out the logic on this, but owning a 2139t top handle for almost two years and listening to all this complaining bout the 201t makes me smirk. Oh yeah it was $420, but that is a climbing saw.

Hmmmm, interesting. When did you first buy a 455 Rancher? Because I have had mine for 8 years and haven't had a single problem with it. And I beat the shite out of it!!!

I've had 3 of them i believe. Within the past 5 years. Every one of them had something weird happen where the clutch cover wouldn't go back on no matter what we tried. I read later about a fix for it but felt it was too much of a PITA. I read reviews where many people had the same problem.

I own a 545 and 550xp husky. The 545 can be had for just a tad over $400 with 18". That saw IMHO cuts with or out cuts the 50cc 346 all day.

400-500 budget and wanting new 545 hands down.
