I don't recognize the beetle....

But on picture two, looks like big predator eyes and possibly mandibles for hunting.

I'm not saying this due to your name either, but it looks more like a predator beetle to me.

Looks closely related to a tiger beetle that hunts other insects.

If no one here id's it, there are some good insect forums out there that will.

almost looked like a shine to the beetle with some color in it, similar to the familar tiger beetles.

Oh and welcome to the buzz.

Welcome to the buzz. I have heard of a borer that is attacking Maples, I haven't seen one just heard of it recently. I have seen the Asian long horn beetle damage on Maples, they are white and black. Interesting to find out what it is, and what it is doing.

Hey ya'll, thanks for the warm welcome and thoughts on the critter. I'm and east coaster (occasional world traveler) currently in new england going for my cert. Lots of studying left to do but I have been having a blast learning what I can on the job. I'm sure to have lots of questions for everyone, so I am very happy to be here!
