Thousands of suspected Africanized honey bees attacked three men Friday morning when the tree-service crew was cutting down a dead tree the bees had infested, authorities said.

The men, from All-n-All Tree Service, were stung up to 50 times each, fire officials estimated. One of them was flown to a nearby hospital after complaining of nausea, a symptom of an allergic reaction, said acting fire Lt. James Bennett III. The two others were treated at the scene.

A fourth member of the crew avoided getting stung.

The attack occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of West Summit Avenue.

Authorities said as soon as the tree hit the ground, thousands of the bees, also known as “killer bees,” swarmed the men.

“They were extremely aggressive,” Bennett said. “Fifty stings is quite excessive.”

San Antonio Vector Control was called in to kill the bees.
