Catch you out? that would be ridiculous.

I was just wanting to find out where you would draw the line on climbing a hazardous tree. When would you use a cherry picker?

I would like to use bucket trucks more but access does not allow it. So you end up climbing hazardous trees.

blah blah blah.......

Grover, your consistently arrogant attitude is proving very unhelpful, don't you think? I'm not sure what your intent is at times, it's one thing to discuss the different ways of doing things, or even debate it in a reasoned and polite manner, but you seem to only want to either obliquely or directly insult people for their actions or opinions. Why not simply disagree, and not be insulting to others whom you don't really know. You said:
your bleeding heart attitude to the poor little old groundies is laughable.

or
to do this for the benefit of the ground crew is borderline stupidity.

Just how are comments like that really helpful or instructive? You talk about this being a great site, why not do your part to elevate the discourse and respect? It's one thing to address someone who is being rude or aggressive towards you, but really. In this circumstance (and many, many similar circumstances), why be needlessly rude? Or why assume that you know best all the time? Why not take the time and effort to moderate your tone so that you don't come across as someone who thinks that they have all the answers and need to illuminate the dumb hicks that frequent this board. If you don't think that you really come across like that, fair enough, but why do you think that so many of your posts are followed by strife rather than friendly discussion? Is it just that people are too sensitive, and not that you are insensitive? I suppose everyone else is wrong, and you are right. It sure seems like you suppose that. I apologize for derailing this thread, posts like these particularly chafe me, and I think that they degrade the quality of discussion.

To address the topic at hand, I'd say that I don't believe anyone mentioned the climber dissecting the crown, merely making some unspecified number of extra cuts to make the job easier for those on the ground. I don't believe consideration for those people you are working with is a bad thing, or stupid. My life and safety are not more important than theirs. And, injuries on the ground far surpass those of climbers. If I can safely make another cut to facilitate their job, I'll do it. If not, I won't. Seems reasonable to me.

I don't know if this was going through Steve's mind or not, he hasn't mentioned it so prob not.....given the size of the defect at the base makes good sense to me making all the pieces cut from the main stem as small and light as practical, less shock to the stem even if only in the mind of the climber makes for an easier less stressful days work...That would have been my approach anyway, even if it wasn't weighing on Steve's mind.
