Bastone tree

Got A call on the two way the other day to look at this Bastone tree with Armillaria. I found the Eastern side of the trunk and buttress roots to be pretty much dead. This tree leaned fairly heavy to the South West, and with predictions of high winds and more rain in the forcast we decided to remove the Suthern and northern Laterals leaving the central for the time being. I hated to remove this tree...was a beauty

Here are some pics ... enjoy

Northern Lateral over street only took about forty five minuts to remove, where as the suthern took three hours..I was able to just bomb the material out.

Yep , it was just a guess at the time , after i posted i seen you are from magalia ,what a guess . I am starting a new tree care business in a week or so and will be advertising in butte county ,mainly focusing on the chico area . Since you work for the city ,maybe you can tell me some things I may run into that is a no-no in chico ?

Looked like nice weather to work in, not.

Hey, what's a bastone tree, I goggled but jack came up.

They're gonna be some big wounds close to the base ... how come you didn't remove the whole tree?

And what is the future for whats left?

Just curious.

Bastone is a type of Walnut ,Chico is also known as "Tree City" and have aggresive tree preservation programs I believe /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

EKKA ,
Sorry for the delay in response...I didnt know anyone else replied.

The tree is pretty much doomed. Yes those are some very big wounds..I dont like doing that, but it was a liability issue over the road and building. I would have rather taken it all the way then leave it like that .

Once the Armillaris has hit, it wont be long before it's dead. Year, maybe a little more. It's a shame , was a beautiful tree.

BAstone, as erik said is a type of Walnut . Basically a cross between English and Black. They look like a English , but get massive taking on the Blacks size and form. The shell looks English however, is hard like a black and the meat is also minimal like black.

They also call this tree a Paradox...hence the similarities. If my memory serves correct, also known as Butternut.

Thanks
Greg

If that's the case, then I'd say it's Butternut, also known locally as Bastone. But I doubt based on the description it's a Butternut. Google helps a little, maybe:

"One such find quickly became Beauchamp's most prized piece of wood - a paradox walnut tree (the type tree is locally known as bastone, the tree produced when the nut of a California black walnut tree is pollinated by an English walnut)."

Pretty much says the same thing you did, sans mentioning Butternut.
