Bar for Stihl MS880

Steve Connally

Been here much more than a while
Bought a MS 880 with the big bar on it. Will only use it a few times a year but if I can find a 36" bar to fit it, I could use it more often. Anybody know where to get one. Stihl says they dont make one because its the big chain and Bailey's doesn't have one either. It has to have the 10mm opening for the bar studs.

They pop up on e-bay quite often.I myself have several 36" that I adapted to use on Mac 125's.Fact is,the first one I bought was a brand new Winser with a new square ground .404 chisel chain for around $50.

I have that bar on a 2100 Homelite that is pictured on Mike Acres site.

what do you mean by big chain, .404 cause I am sure Stihl makes bars for them in that gauge, most guys up here run 3/8's in .063 gauge on the 880/088/084, it cuts alot faster
and nicer in hardwood

Is it set up with 404? Switch the sprocket to 063 or 3/8 and you'll be able to find one. I have a 36" bar for an 046(3/8 gauge). my 394 run 063, 42" bar.

I have the sprocket. I bought the big bar with the saw. They said they dont make the big bar with a 3/8" Has to be 1/2" chain, so I got it. Now my plan is to change the sprocket when I use the 36" and according to Stihl dealer, due to the 10mm bar studs they don't make a bar for that set-up. I was also told by them, you cant replace the tip of replacable bar tips when they're damaged. Sounded odd to me. I have several bars where my guys have pinched the tip and I cat straighten them. I stay with this dealer because they give me sweet deals on saws but seems my information is a little off kilter sometimes.

Here is the Stihl Bar and Chain Catalog in PDF format.

It looks like TreeBuzz will not support the attachment. PM me your email address and I will send it directly to you.

The gear is the same spline as a 372,460,660 use just put a 8 pin on it , as far as bars most guys use the .404 bar for an 880 just change the tip from .404 to 3/8's . Just make sure the bar you use has a 3/8 tip that will fit it and you pretty much need a bar meantfor to 084/088/880 cause the tail section is alot bigger than a 066 bar , the bolt pattern on the 880 is bigger but the main thing is making the oil hole line up on the 880 , a bar for a 066 would need to be cut back alot to get the bar thick enough to line up with the oil hole coming out of the saw

Yes, convert it to 3/8"! I keep a 41" woodsman pro bar on the saw, but I have up to a 72" Woodsman pro bar, again in 3/8" .063 gauge.

I never ran .404, which is what your saw is presently running most likely.

The Woodsman bars aren't cheap, but I have had good luck with them.

What are the reasons behind Stihl not providing the 36"/90cm bar anymore? they used to make one whats wrong with it now... they used to make a 48"/120cm bar also that seems to stopped also just been checking the catalouge here in Germany, no sign of these bars anymore.

I have the newest catalog and I put the numbers into the computer and they aid they were available.

They do not offer a 36" repalceable tip bar in 36" 3/8" anymore. Only 17" and 21". 30, 36, 41, and 47 all 3/8", .063 are all available in hardnose bars according to my catalog and the Stihl ordering website.
