balancer---spyder line?

Use any smaller line and tie a friction hitch as long as it is rated for the work. Say if you were using 5/8 stable for the run, then use a hank of 1/2 stable for the balancer, etc.

Personally, I just buy the slings and never look back. Just another tool in the bag of tricks.

We can talk you through the splice. Alternatively, there are a few people here that can do it for you.

Remember- if a $60 piece of gear saves you a few minutes at 1 job, it only takes a couple jobs before it has paid for itself.

For most climbing aspects, the strength of a splice is of little value, since the knots are strong enough. But with rigging gear, you never really know how strong you'll want something to be down the road. The splice is worth it in this application.

My favorite balancer is an eye-eye sling prusiked onto a piece of rope. each end of the rope gets tied to the limb to be balanced. the prusik placement is for adjusting the angle of the dangle.

i get that....seeing some pictures of something of the sort being used i was thinking of extra chunks of rope laying around. and using 2 ropes to let ot a chunk can be a pain as we all know.
would you use tenex or rope? and how long of a chunk? and how much does one charge for a splice?

would this be girth hitching one splice on the log and connecting the other with say a biner/prusik to the let down? what prusik are we using?

I have a couple shackles with stable braid girth hitched to them. Its like haveing to legs to tie with.

Great idea. When you know what you are doing you don't need a bunch of fancy store bought gear!

Yes, just a weaver saddle and lots of rope. I make a lot of eye slings myself as well as the spyder link and a bunch of self made rope slings. Not cause I am cheap but I want it exactly like I want it.

Just to bring this up- Has anyone seen a rope break right at or in the knot? I haven't. Not to say it is not possible but every rope I saw break it broke nowhere near the knots. I guess the experts ran the math but in the field I have not seen it apply.

this would be what i see Nick's description as:

red rope is a rigging line
blue rope is the balancer...a chuck of rope tied at either end

the brown blob is the eye-n-eye prusik which is mobile on the blue rope to change the "angle of the dangle" and is attatched to the red rope via a rigging carabiner and another knot?

is this right nick?
