badnews...eab diversifying how far will this go?

I just read that yesterday. EAB hasn't spread to me just yet but it's only a matter of time. I wonder how bad it's going to get before we settle into some sort of equilibrium. Or if we will at all.

No surprise really. The ALB did the transition to alternative species before it was exported from Asia.

I think it is a HUGE surprise...after 12 years it switches. We have had infestation for about 7 or more years (many years it is there and no one knows it). I discovered it in our town. Cinci in general is probably about half cleared of ash now at least.

Amur honeysuckle of course but my new property of 5 years was vacant prior to for only a couple of decades and the whole area including adjacent was covered with Ch. elm in the 3' dia., 60' range. As bad an invasive as there is and they likely have a allelopathic capacity as well. Gets my vote.

Why couldn't this happen to something we really WANT to get rid of
I for one certainly won't miss the Ash. Thank whatever it's not the Sugar Maples. Honestly, I do not like working with the Ash. In fact, I get mildly irritated at just the sight of one. Certainly there are lots of other trees worth looking at. I have no clue as to why any one would even consider planting them in landscapes. If you like them, sorry for your coming loss.
We have lots of Ash in upstate NY. Near by city planted them when the elms died. Some streets are lined with them, plan on cruising the streets with a buddy's timbco, loading into the tractor log trailer. They got hammered in ice storm of '98. Still pruning them from that event. I find the limbs terribly annoying to handle, stack, drag and worse, feed to the chipper. When I was into fire wood, I enjoyed splitting them. Terrible trees for throw lines. Never trust a rotten or dead one, holding wood breaks often before notch closes. Whatever...I'm more stressed about the loss of diversity.
That said...we are about to make some money from their demise. Plan on it.

Pears, Bradford pears, I have nightmares just knowing I have to work on them. Its sometimes not even the trees its the customers that expect miracles. Don't have much hate toward ash's I'm kind of neutral but don't look forward to the client that waits entirely to long to remove their tree.

Yup, I'm hoping it makes way for a larger knuckleboom. I like the irritated level of tolerance phrase I'm gonna incorporate that today. (y) ready I am,maybe, we'll see.
