Bad, rotten crotch.

This Tulip poplar the other day had a pretty bad, rotten crotch.

It needed to be taken down in pieces; some of it roped down, most of it chunked.

Crotch looked very weak, so we attached a chain and a binder to add support first. Done this two times now this summer.

Picture of crotch. (before I pulled the poison ivy off).

Tree didn't worry me after I added the chain, felt very stable the whole time.

Xman I did a pine removal like this 2 weeks ago where I used 8 10,000lb binder straps to sinch the split (lighting struck) trunk back together. Worked great.

The tree I removed was covered in poisen ivy too and yes we all got itchy for a week after the removal.

I got some good pics of the topping out that I'll post later.

That is one ugly tree . I hate using those turn binders , when someone over turns them you just want to throw them . Was there cables in thast tree ?

Chris, cool, post em.

Riggs, no cables. Suprizing that it hadn't come apart. A few weeks earlier this area got the outside winds of a tornado. It torn up a perfectly fine ash tree only 150 feet from this poplar. But this poplar had stayed together. Since they were having the ash removed, they had this poplar, a black cherry and another ash removed.

X, what makes you choose the chain and binder over a strap? I use straps religiously on something like this in case something breaks there a strap will do much less damage to a person.

I too use straps. PU why do you feel it would do less damage? Because rhe chain might fly farther?

I had a cottonwood removal(no not in telluride) that was lightning struck and split all the way up the trunk. Couldn't get any equipment to it so it had to be climbed. I used some chain and boomers in four spots along the trunk and it held- still kind of sketch ball though. It is a good option for compromised trees. Nice pics.
