Does anybody on here still use a buckstrap? Old school lanyard with one end a splice loop that forms a prussik onto itself to adjust the length. Usually with snaps at each end?

I got an old sta set yacht braid 5/8. I took the heavy steel snaps off and use it as a retrievable false croch, base anchor, secondary lanyard and when blocking down a spar I take it apart and wrap the stem with it then put the prussik back on and tie into the tail or just clip in to the tail depending on the size of the stem.

Because its versatile, and strong enough to do all that with. Works fast and smooth for me. Can even use it for rigging false crotch too. But I don't rig with mine because i sometimes use it as an FS. Lmk if u see any safety concerns about it pls and ty.

I know theirs way better stuff out there but I'm cheap and pack light and like versatile tools

Why?

In about 1976 when I started climbing I learned from a Bell System lineman...using a flat buckled 'scare strap'. That works for vertical poles where dimensions don't change. Climbing trees with a variety of diameters and off angles makes for lots of adjusting

The buckle of adjuster is ALWAYS on the back of the tree

Move the adjustment to the hip,its stationary

Why go back in history?

Wait...did you say you use your lanyard for rigging? No...I must have misread. No one still uses climbing gear for rigging do they?

I only said its strong enough. I never said I did. And its a secondary lanyard. My go to is a hc pulley with hitch on sterling tri-tech. Its just seems today so many guys are too gear intensive at work. About half the time or more it doesn't go up with me. Just stating the versatility and wondering if anybody could tell me if there was anything wrong with any of these uses besides the obvious. I haven't had any problems. Only been using it for almost a year.

And the stem is too big I take the prussik apart and put a pulley with a hitch on it

You can be you all you want. But if you ask the efficient climbers, it’s not about taking all the gear up the tree. That is essential gear to be efficient and avoid doing two to three times the work to accomplish the same goal. The industry is advancing at a faster and faster rate, you don’t have to adopt it, but people will look at you a little funny if you wonder why nobody uses the old methods.

Ya I hear that. I got gear too. Mostly wondering if anything isn't safe. Don't really care what it looks like

It’s safe to use the old school method. People like what they like and I would only ever question efficient applications.

And I totally agree with the too much gear...the industry pimps us to buy stuff and the best method for them is to make it seem like nobody uses x method. Everyone uses the new y method and that costs $300. Tree gear is very expensive and I’m still figuring out why.

If you are asking if it is safe is good. If you aren’t sure than i always default to a for sure method. I’ve not seen a prussic used for a basil anchor though.

Post a pic. Seems like the piece of junk needs burning...now stop saying that modern progressive gear is too expensive and is not necessary....go to a comp and spew that rubbish....you will get some odd looks and there will probably be a cellar position for you to hold onto with your buckstrap....lol
