Any new Climbers?

I just started climbing this year and am going to be starting my apprenticeship in January @ Humber College. Just wondering if there are any other newbies out there.

I would consider myself a newbi as I have only been climbing about a year. And since I do not do it full time, actual number of climbs puts me in that category.

Princess,

I'm not a newbie, but I just wanted to welcome you to the biz. It can be hard work, but it's worth it when you make it to the top of the tallest tree around, stop for a breath, and enjoy the view that few people ever get to see.

You've got a huge head start over what most of us had when we started just by finding this site. I guess you'd say I'm a veteran climber now, but I still get to learn new things all the time by mixing with the world's best climbers and arborists in cyberspace. I climbed a good two years before I even heard of a Blake's hitch, split tail or knot tender, much less the advanced tools and techniques I've since learned about.

So keep reading and learning, and enjoy your career. Again, I'm glad to welcome a new member to our rarefied community. As Tom Dunlap used to say, Strong Limbs and Snug Ropes!

I know Tree Princess, and I know the people who have been mentoring her in the workplace. I've done a little climbing (rec) with the crew of them, and she has a better strength to weight ratio than some new guys I've taught. Tree Princess will be one of my pupils @ Humber and I'm confident she will be helping US teach a little.

Welcome to the trees Tree Princess! It's great to see another woman out there. Hope to meet you soon at in Nashville at the ITCC. Enjoy the view and the soul food!

Yeah, I'm new. 42 years old and just figured out how to get to those high branches that are begging to be pruned. Now if I can find a way to make enough money doing it to replace my day job. Great website.

Merak,

Welcome to tree climbing!

Depending on the market that you live in it might be a challenge to find a wage that replaces your day job. But, life is more than money. There are rewards in the trees that don't pay the mortgage but sure fill the soul.

If you want to connect with arbos in your area, ask here. The folks here in Buzzland are very generous.

With 4 kids, money isn't everything but its a big thing. I may be offered an opportunity to start a new career(layoff) in the next year. (I'm an Aircraft Mechanic for NWA) Until then, I'll have to remain on the amateur list. How much can an arborist hope to earn in the Minneapolis/St Paul/Western Wisconsin area? I live in St Croix County.

Keith,

Thanks for the warm welcome. The best part is sitting at the top of your tree and taking in the view. I've been to about 50 ft. and am certainly always scoping out the bigger ones waiting for my turn. And, I'm glad to find this site as well. There is SO much to learn on here. Thanks again.

Merak,

If you're looking for work talk with Dennis Ullom [sp?] of St. Croix Tree Service.

I just moved away from the Cities in May. I miss the water but love seeing the mountains :)

Tree Princess! Welcome! Let's see a pic! /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Most tree jobs pay between $5-$105/hour, but in the Midwest, I think $15-$18/hour is what you can expect with climbing experience. You can hit $25/hour, but that's the top of the pay scale after a lot of years with much learning and improvement. And for 1600 hours/year, realistically.

The ESOP at NWA won't hold you through retirement? /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

wow, this is a record in my treebuzz and even AS experience - 3 women climbers in the same thread! woohoo! i DO have people!!

welcome princess - sounds like you're off on the right foot w/treebuzz access and some mentors. more than i had 10 yrs ago - i climbed on a two wrap 8mm english prusik for maybe 7 years - no micropulleys, no "advanced" hitches, no digital mentors. why back when i was a whippersnapper... ok, just kiddin.

hey there treebeach, i've been meaning to call you lately. things are rockin my world in a not great way. more later..
k.

Hey Nickrosis,

Forget me already? I met you at TCIA in Detroit, we chatted briefly about bats eating mosquitoes and the arborsite, which I have yet to visit but is on my to do list! /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'll work on getting a pic though, not sure if I have any in the trees yet.

Thanks Tom, St Croix Tree Service is only about 10 miles from home. I heard your name at Fresco when I was there buying my gear, someone there said you had moved to Colorado. I've always wanted to live out west since I first visited Colorado 26 years ago, but only made it as far as Minnesota.
