Another splicing question

When i try to make my way from the crossover all the way out to the exit point of the core, i get stuck with my fid about three cm. below the crotch..
what i do is exit and re enter...it works but the end result could be nicer plus the splicing process smoother??

i still have blisters!

thanx

I would use a pull fid. Use a piece of wire folded in half. There are a lot of discussions here about this. Search for these phrases:

wire fid
coat hanger
piano wire
pull fid

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your constant replies to splicing questions. that really keeps me going & advancing.

While looking true old post i stumbled on 'naked' splices. Is this the way to go for hitch cords? and do you make them in the manner as in the link below?

will give the wire fid a go. looks like that will work fine. however i do wonder about the bit of rope that will be sticking out of the end of the tip. and thus form a lump..
well will have to try and see.

thanx

Trust me, the little lump is a lot easier to fit through than most aluminum push fids.

The directions you posted show a splice with the eye exposed. Yep- those make sense if you are splicing beeline, HRC, ultra-tech or anything along those lines. These are core-dependent ropes, unlike Stable Braid, Double Esterlon, and Blaze.

Yep- do a locking brummell, maybe 2 locks, then bury 6" of tail. These are the directions typically given by Yale and NER...though it sometimes changes.

A little lost in jargon there.

what i want to do is put splices in a rope we call ocean polyester. it's a very heat resistant rope and the core is some kind of shiny braided stuff.

Does this ring a bell? If then the locking brummel is the way to go for this rope. And making a friction hitch cord. Do you then give the cover some more length? Other then the distance between the two splices? Just to give the cover some more room for play.

hope you can plow true my text

Maarten- I don't know the splicing directions for that rope. The only place that (I know) sells it is Sherrill and they sell the grizzly splice on it. I had the chance to try out Ocean and I didn't think it was better than HRC and Beeline, and thus not worth pursuing such an exotic (from the other side of the pond) rope.

My guess is that it wouldn't be spliced with an exposed eye. It's has a polyester core with a blended cover. It might be spliced like a class 1 double braid- just like the 10mm Beeline.

And no- you don't want extra core. You don't want room for play. It makes the cover loose and floppy. You want it snug and balanced out with the core.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge! it would have taken me for ever to find the answers you gave me.
Going on an open sea sailing trip for a few weeks, will have all the time to work them out..

all the best
